The Fine Print Report
Light fine print. The rate step-ups are the main catch.
Missed payments: 12.99% becomes 29.99%Impact level: High
The 12.99% rate becomes 25.99% after 2 missed payments and 29.99% after 3
12.99% is the preferred rate. After 2 separate Missed Payments the rates on the account become 25.99%, and after 3 they become 29.99%. The definition of a Missed Payment, and which rates apply to which charges, are in the information box sent with the application.
Why it matters: The low rate is the reason to hold this card. Two late payments more than double it.
No rewardsImpact level: Medium
No rewards on purchases
The card earns no points or cash back; its benefits are the lower interest rate, purchase insurance and access to Amex Experiences.
Why it matters: If you pay in full every month, a no-fee rewards card returns more.
Carry a balance: interest from purchase dayImpact level: Medium
Interest-free days apply only when you pay the full balance; funds advances never have them
Interest on a purchase is charged from the day it's made unless the full balance is paid by the due date. Funds advances, balance transfers and Amex cheques are charged interest from the day they're made, even if you pay in full.
Why it matters: A 12.99% rate still adds up on balances that carry over.
2.5% FX fee, not refunded on returnsImpact level: Medium
2.5% foreign currency conversion commission, not refunded on returns
Charges in a foreign currency are converted by Amex's currency affiliate and a 2.5% conversion commission is added. The agreement sets the rate in the information box sent with the application rather than on the product page. The commission isn't returned when a foreign-currency purchase is refunded.
Why it matters: Spending $200 a month in U.S. dollars, on subscriptions for example, adds about $60 a year in conversion fees, and refunds of foreign purchases don't return the original commission.
No travel medical or rental car coverImpact level: Low
Only purchase protection, extended warranty and travel accident insurance
Insurance is limited to Buyer's Assurance, Purchase Protection and $100,000 travel accident cover. There's no medical, trip cancellation or rental car coverage.
Why it matters: Travellers need separate insurance.

The Verdict
The Essential card charges 12.99% interest for a $25 annual fee, well below the 20%+ on most cards.
It earns nothing, and two missed payments raise the rate to 25.99%, three to 29.99%.
The Recommendation: A reasonable low-rate card for people who carry a balance and never pay late.
