Rates: Membership Rewards Terms 50500074 (10/26), Appendix 2 — Redemption Rates by Reward. The CardTruth estimate is our own valuation, not a rate stated in the terms. It assumes the redemption described above; most other options return less. Ranges marked est. are CardTruth estimates, from a conservative redemption to a typical one.
The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. The everyday 2x earn is straightforward, but several advertised travel perks carry fees or narrow conditions.
$800 value counts paid lounge visitsImpact level: High
The "up to $800 in annual value" counts lounge memberships that charge per visit and spending most people won't reach
Amex's $800 figure is a sum of benefits. It counts the Priority Pass membership at $139 even though every Priority Pass lounge visit carries a usage fee, values the 4 Plaza Premium visits at $220, assumes $17,200 a year in card spending for $204 in points, and counts a hotel credit that needs a two-night stay. It also excludes the $250 annual fee.
Why it matters: Add up only what you'd actually use. The Priority Pass membership saves nothing on its own, since you still pay for each visit; the travel credit and Plaza Premium visits are the parts that offset the fee.
Priority Pass visits cost a fee each timeImpact level: High
Priority Pass lounge visits are not free: every visit is charged a usage fee
The Gold card includes a Priority Pass membership, not free visits. All Priority Pass lounge visits, for you and any guests, are subject to a usage fee at the prevailing rate, charged automatically to your Gold card. Supplementary Cardmembers are not eligible for membership.
Why it matters: The card's only free lounge access is the 4 Plaza Premium visits a year in Canada. If you expect free lounge access abroad, budget for a fee on every Priority Pass visit.
Travel medical: age 64 or under, 15 daysImpact level: High
Emergency medical insurance covers only travellers 64 or under, for the first 15 days of a trip
Out-of-province emergency medical coverage applies to the first 15 consecutive days of each trip and only to insured persons aged 64 or under on the departure date. If you don't contact Global Excel before treatment, you pay 20% of eligible expenses, up to $25,000.
Why it matters: Travellers 65 or older need separate travel medical insurance, and longer trips need a top-up for the days after day 15. Medical conditions that weren't stable in the 90 days before departure are excluded.
2x only at stand-alone stores in CanadaImpact level: Medium
2x on gas, groceries and drugstores only at stand-alone merchants in Canada
The 2x rate applies at stand-alone gas stations, grocery stores and drugstores in Canada. Superstores, wholesale clubs, alcohol retailers and general-merchandise retailers that also sell gas, groceries or pharmacy items earn 1x, as do these purchases outside Canada.
Why it matters: If most of your groceries or gas come from a superstore or wholesale club, that spending earns 1x. Check how your usual stores are categorized on your statement.
1x via electronic wallets and third partiesImpact level: Medium
Purchases made with an electronic wallet or through a third party earn 1x
The product page's earn terms say the 1x base rate applies when a purchase is made using an electronic wallet, is not made directly with the provider of the good or service (for example, through a third party), or is made on a card reader attached to a mobile phone. The terms don't define "electronic wallet".
Why it matters: A grocery or gas purchase paid this way can earn 1x instead of 2x. If you often pay through a wallet or third-party service, check the points on your statement.

Welcome bonus needs $1,000 every monthImpact level: Medium
The 60,000-point welcome bonus needs $1,000 in posted purchases every month for a year
The welcome bonus pays 5,000 points for each billing period in your first year in which at least $1,000 in net purchases posts to your account. A purchase that posts after a billing period ends counts toward the next one; in your 12th billing period, it doesn't count at all.
Why it matters: The full 60,000 points takes $12,000 of spending spread evenly across 12 months. Any month that falls short forfeits that month's 5,000 points.
No bonus if you've held a Gold card beforeImpact level: Medium
Current or former Gold Rewards Cardmembers aren't eligible for the welcome bonus
The welcome offer is only for new American Express Gold Rewards Cardmembers. Amex may still approve an application from a current or former Gold Rewards Cardmember, but that account won't be eligible for the points offers in its first 12 months.
Why it matters: If you've held a Gold Rewards Card before, reapplying gets you the card but not the welcome bonus.
$100 travel credit: one $100+ bookingImpact level: Medium
The $100 travel credit only works on a single $100+ booking through Amex Travel Online
The credit can only be used at the time of booking on American Express Travel Online, toward a single travel booking of $100 or more charged to the Gold card. It resets each card-anniversary year and can't be carried forward. If you cancel the booking after using the credit, you can't use it again that year.
Why it matters: Bookings made directly with airlines or hotels don't qualify. Plan one Amex Travel booking of at least $100 each card year.
All points lost if you cancelImpact level: Medium
All points are forfeited immediately if you cancel the card
Cancelling the Gold card forfeits every point in the account immediately, unless another linked card stays open. Separately, if a required monthly payment is missed, the points earned in the previous month are removed, and points can't be redeemed until payments are up to date.
Why it matters: Redeem or transfer your points before cancelling. Paying at least the minimum on time every month also protects the previous month's points.
2.5% FX fee, not refunded on returnsImpact level: Medium
2.5% foreign currency conversion commission, not refunded on returns
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted to Canadian dollars with a 2.5% conversion commission. Charges in currencies other than USD are converted to USD first, then to CAD. If a foreign-currency purchase is refunded, the commission charged on the original purchase is not returned.
Why it matters: A freelancer paying $200/month in USD subscriptions pays an extra $60/year in conversion fees. Refunds of foreign purchases don't return the original commission either.
4 lounge visits a year, shared with guestsImpact level: Low
The 4 free Plaza Premium visits are per calendar year, shared with guests, and capped at 2 hours
Basic Cardmembers get four complimentary Plaza Premium lounge visits per calendar year in Canada. Visits used for accompanying guests count toward the four. Each stay is limited to 2 hours, and after four visits a usage fee applies. Supplementary Cardmembers only get in as a Basic Cardmember's guest.
Why it matters: Travelling as a couple, four visits cover two round trips. More frequent travellers pay per visit after that.
Trip cancellation: $1,500 per personImpact level: Low
Trip cancellation pays up to $1,500 per person, and half that for catastrophic events
Trip cancellation covers up to $1,500 per insured person and $3,000 for all insured persons combined; trip interruption covers up to $1,500 per person and $6,000 combined. Claims resulting from a catastrophic event are reimbursed at a maximum of 50%.
Why it matters: Expensive prepaid trips can exceed these limits. Only prepaid travel charged to the card or paid with Membership Rewards points is covered.
No mobile device insuranceImpact level: Low
No mobile device insurance
The Gold Rewards Card's insurance package does not include mobile device insurance. The Cobalt Card, which has a lower annual fee, includes it.
Why it matters: If you rely on card-provided phone insurance, the Gold card doesn't offer it.

The Verdict
The Gold Rewards Card is a middle option between the Cobalt and the Platinum: 2x on gas, groceries, drugstores and travel with no monthly cap, a $100 travel credit, and four free Plaza Premium visits a year, for a $250 annual fee.
The fine print narrows the travel side. Priority Pass is a paid-per-visit membership rather than free lounge access, the travel credit needs a single Amex Travel booking, and emergency medical coverage ends at age 64 and after 15 days.
The Recommendation: Best for people under 65 whose spending is spread across gas, groceries, drugstores and travel, and who will use the travel credit and Plaza Premium visits each year. If most of your spending is dining and groceries under $2,500 a month, the Amex Cobalt earns more for a lower fee.
