The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. A capable travel card with a hard age limit on medical.
Medical: 21 days, none at 65+Impact level: High
Travel medical covers only 21 days, and nobody 65 or older
Emergency travel medical covers up to $5,000,000 per person for the first 21 days of a trip, but only if everyone covered is 64 or younger on the departure date. Conditions that weren't stable in the 90 days before departure aren't covered.
Why it matters: Anyone 65 or older, and anyone away longer than 21 days, needs separate travel medical insurance.
Points: 0.67¢ on travel, 0.5¢ otherwiseImpact level: Medium
Points are worth 0.67 cents on travel and 0.5 cents on anything else, and only within 90 days of the purchase
Pay with Points credits your card for a purchase at 150 points per $1 if the merchant is classified as a travel merchant (airline, hotel, car rental, cruise, travel agency and similar), and 200 points per $1 for anything else. Purchases can only be covered up to 90 days after they're made, and point redemptions don't count toward your minimum payment.
Why it matters: The welcome bonus value BMO advertises assumes travel redemptions. Used for other purchases, the points are worth a quarter less.
Full bonus needs $20,000 in 12 monthsImpact level: Medium
The full 115,000-point bonus needs $20,000 in purchases within 12 months
The welcome points come in stages, and the last and largest stage needs $20,000 in net purchases within 12 months of opening the account. Bonus points are credited up to 8 weeks after each stage is met, the account must be open and in good standing, and BMO may cancel the bonus if you close the card within 365 days. You're not eligible if you've held the same card before or are switching from another BMO card.
Why it matters: Plan the spending before you apply: falling short of a stage forfeits that stage entirely.
2.5% FX fee; refunds credited at a lower rateImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds come back at a lower rate
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted at the network's rate plus 2.50%. Refunds are converted at the network's rate minus 2.50% on the day the refund posts, and BMO's agreement says the credit will in most cases be less than the original charge.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees, and a returned foreign purchase costs about the same again.
2 missed payments: 25.99% for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates to 25.99% and 28.99% for at least a year
If you miss your minimum payment and haven't paid it by the time the next statement is prepared, twice in any 12-month period, your rates rise to 25.99% on purchases and 28.99% on cash advances and balance transfers, for at least 12 months.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it far more expensive. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.

Closure: BMO can take your depositsImpact level: Medium
BMO can close the account without notice, demand the full balance and take it from your BMO deposits
BMO may cancel your card or close the account at any time without telling you in advance. The total debt is then due immediately, and if you don't pay it, BMO may apply any money you have on deposit with it or its affiliates against the balance.
Why it matters: If your chequing or savings account is also at BMO, an unpaid balance can be taken from it directly.
115,000 offer ends December 7, 2026Impact level: Low
The 115,000-point offer is only for applications received by December 7, 2026
The current offer period runs from September 15 to December 7, 2026, after which the page's previous offer of 100,000 points (shown struck through) may return. BMO can change or withdraw the offer without notice.
Why it matters: If you apply after the window, check which bonus applies.
Recurring bills: some don't earn 3xImpact level: Low
Recurring bills that also count as travel, dining or entertainment don't earn the extra 3x
Recurring bill payments must be billed automatically by the merchant to the card, not every regular payment qualifies, and a recurring payment that's also a travel, dining or entertainment purchase earns only that category's rate. Merchants on the premises of an eligible merchant but coded differently earn 1 point.
Why it matters: Check with each provider that its charges are set up as recurring card payments.
4 lounge passes a year, guests includedImpact level: Low
The 4 free lounge passes are shared with anyone travelling with you; extra visits cost US$32 each
Membership in Mastercard Travel Pass (DragonPass) includes 4 complimentary visits a year, which also cover any companions you bring. Every visit after that costs US$32 per person, billed to the card, and you must enroll separately to activate the benefit.
Why it matters: Travelling as a couple, 4 passes cover 2 trips through a lounge.
Points expire 90 days after closingImpact level: Low
After you close the card, points can only go to merchandise and gift cards, and expire after 90 days
Points don't expire while the account is open and in good standing. After cancellation you have 90 days to redeem them, for merchandise and gift cards only, or to move them to another BMO Rewards card. The welcome bonus is cancelled if you cancel within 30 days of being billed the annual fee and the fee is refunded.
Why it matters: Use your points on travel or statement credits before you close or downgrade the card.

The Verdict
The Ascend World Elite earns 5 points per dollar on travel and 3 on dining, entertainment and bills, with full trip insurance for travellers under 65.
Points are worth 0.67 cents on travel and 0.5 cents otherwise, so 5x is about 3.3% back, and there's no travel medical coverage at all once you're 65.
The Recommendation: A good fit for travellers under 65 who book their own trips and redeem points against them.
