Points & Redemption

The Fine Print Report
Light fine print. Simple, but modest rewards and an inflated headline offer.
$200 offer = $40 as a card creditImpact level: Medium
The "up to $200 in value" welcome offer is $40 if you use the points on your card balance
The bonus is 6,000 Adapta Points. CIBC values them at 1,200 points per $10 when contributed to select CIBC financial products, and adds roadside assistance ($50) and a free Skip+ membership ($110). Redeemed toward your card balance, the same points are worth 1,500 per $10, or $40.
Why it matters: Judge the offer by the points' cash value, not the headline figure.
Top 3 categories set by merchant codesImpact level: Medium
Your top 3 categories are decided by merchant codes, and CIBC won't recategorize purchases
The 0.5 bonus points apply to the 3 spend categories with the highest net purchases each statement period, based solely on the merchant's category code. Purchases at big-box, wholesale or online stores may land in an unexpected category, and CIBC won't move them or add points. The bonus also stops after $40,000 of total purchases a year.
Why it matters: The bonus is only 0.5 points per dollar, and it follows how merchants are coded, not what you bought.
No travel insurance at allImpact level: Medium
No travel insurance; purchase protection only
The only insurance is purchase security and extended warranty.
Why it matters: Buy separate travel insurance for any trip.
2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds are converted at a new rate
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted to Canadian dollars at the rate CIBC pays, plus a fee of 2.5% of the converted amount. The fee applies to both debits and credits, and a refund is converted at the rate on the day it's applied, which may differ from the original purchase.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees, and a refunded foreign purchase can still leave you out of pocket.
2 missed payments: 25.99% for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates to 25.99% and 27.99% for at least a year
If CIBC doesn't receive your Required Payment on time twice in any 12-month period, your rates rise to 25.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash advances, balance transfers and convenience cheques, for at least 12 months.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it far more expensive. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.

Default: CIBC can debit your depositsImpact level: Medium
If your account isn't in good standing, CIBC can take the balance from your CIBC deposit accounts and term deposits
When the account isn't in Good Standing, CIBC can demand the full balance and collect it by debiting any deposit account you have with it, or by redeeming fixed-term deposits, whether or not they've matured. It can also suspend or cancel the account without notice, for that or any other reason.
Why it matters: If you bank at CIBC, a missed payment can lead to withdrawals you didn't schedule and to a GIC being cashed early.
Points worth 0.67¢ to 0.83¢Impact level: Low
Points are worth 0.67 cents toward your balance and 0.83 cents toward CIBC financial products
1,500 Adapta Points = $10 toward your card balance; 1,200 Adapta Points = $10 toward select CIBC financial products. Cents don't earn points, so each purchase is rounded down to the dollar.
Why it matters: At 1.5 points per dollar, the top-category rate is worth about 1% to 1.25% back.

The Verdict
The Adapta Mastercard automatically rewards your three biggest categories each month, so there's nothing to track.
The bonus is only half a point per dollar, points are worth under a cent, the welcome value is overstated as a cash figure, and there's no travel insurance.
The Recommendation: Convenient for people who don't want to manage categories; a flat-rate cash back card may pay similarly.
