The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. Strong perks; fee increase and bonus eligibility to check.
Fee rises to $159 on Jan 12, 2027Impact level: High
The annual fee rises from $139 to $159 on January 12, 2027
CIBC has announced that the primary cardholder's annual fee goes from $139 to $159, and each authorized user's from $50 to $80, the next time your fee is charged on or after January 12, 2027. New Air Canada benefits arrive at the same time, including a 15% discount on eligible flight rewards. You can cancel without cost until April 12, 2027.
Why it matters: The advertised $139 fee only applies until your first anniversary on or after January 12, 2027.
Medical: 15 days, only 3 at 65+Impact level: High
Travel medical covers only 3 days of a trip once you're 65
Emergency travel medical covers up to $5,000,000, but only for the first 15 days of a trip if you're 64 or under, and the first 3 days if you're 65 or older. Conditions that weren't stable in the 90 days before departure (180 days at 65 or older) aren't covered, and some treatment needs pre-approval.
Why it matters: Travellers 65 and older are covered for barely a long weekend. Anyone on a longer trip needs separate coverage.
No bonus if you've had this Aeroplan tierImpact level: Medium
No welcome bonus if you've ever earned one on the same tier of Aeroplan card, from any bank
The bonus requires $6,000 in the first 6 statement periods and $12,000 in the first 12 for the full 50,000 points. Under the Aeroplan program terms, you may not receive any of it, even if CIBC approves you, if you've previously received a welcome, additional or anniversary bonus on an Aeroplan credit card of the same category from CIBC or any other issuer, such as TD or Amex.
Why it matters: If you've held a TD or Amex Aeroplan card of the same tier, check before you apply: you could get the card and its fee without the bonus.
2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds are converted at a new rate
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted to Canadian dollars at the rate CIBC pays, plus a fee of 2.5% of the converted amount. The fee applies to both debits and credits, and a refund is converted at the rate on the day it's applied, which may differ from the original purchase.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees, and a refunded foreign purchase can still leave you out of pocket.
2 missed payments: 25.99% for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates to 25.99% and 27.99% for at least a year
If CIBC doesn't receive your Required Payment on time twice in any 12-month period, your rates rise to 25.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash advances, balance transfers and convenience cheques, for at least 12 months.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it far more expensive. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.

Default: CIBC can debit your depositsImpact level: Medium
If your account isn't in good standing, CIBC can take the balance from your CIBC deposit accounts and term deposits
When the account isn't in Good Standing, CIBC can demand the full balance and collect it by debiting any deposit account you have with it, or by redeeming fixed-term deposits, whether or not they've matured. It can also suspend or cancel the account without notice, for that or any other reason.
Why it matters: If you bank at CIBC, a missed payment can lead to withdrawals you didn't schedule and to a GIC being cashed early.
Free bag: Air Canada counter check-in onlyImpact level: Low
The free checked bag only applies on Air Canada-operated flights checked in at the counter
The free first checked bag applies only when checking in with Air Canada for a flight operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge or Air Canada Express, at the check-in counter before security. Bags checked at the gate, flights with other airlines, and fares that already include a bag get nothing extra.
Why it matters: The benefit is worth the most on basic fares that don't include a bag.
Bonus earn stops after $80,000 of spendImpact level: Low
Bonus earning stops after $80,000 of total card spending a year
The 1.5x rate applies only on the first $80,000 of net annual purchases on the account (all cardholders, any merchant). Air Canada bookings for hotels, car rentals and other partners through aircanada.com don't earn the bonus.
Why it matters: Most households won't reach the limit; partner bookings on aircanada.com earn 1 point.
Points lost if not in good standingImpact level: Low
Aeroplan points earned in a month are cancelled if the account isn't in good standing on the statement date
Aeroplan points are awarded only if your account is in Good Standing on each monthly statement date; otherwise, the points earned in that period are cancelled.
Why it matters: A missed payment can wipe out a month of points as well as costing interest.
Phone cover: 2%/month depreciation, 10% offImpact level: Low
Phone insurance pays the depreciated value, 2% less for every month you've owned the device, minus 10%
Mobile device insurance covers loss, theft or accidental damage up to $1,000, but the payout is capped at the device's depreciated value: the purchase price minus 2% for each completed month since you bought it, then minus a 10% deductible. CIBC's own example: a $900 phone lost after 10 months pays at most $648.
Why it matters: A two-year-old phone is covered for about half its price, less the deductible.

The Verdict
The CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite pairs good everyday earning with useful Air Canada perks, such as the free first checked bag, and a broad insurance package.
The fee rises to $159 in January 2027, the bonus is unavailable to anyone who's already received one on this tier of Aeroplan card from any bank, and medical coverage drops to 3 days at 65.
