The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. Rich coverage; the credit and points tie you to CIBC's travel site.
Medical: 31 days, only 10 at 65+Impact level: High
Travel medical covers only 10 days of a trip once you're 65
Emergency travel medical covers up to $5,000,000, but only for the first 31 days of a trip if you're 64 or under, and the first 10 days if you're 65 or older. Conditions that weren't stable in the 90 days before departure (180 days at 65 or older) aren't covered, and some treatment needs pre-approval.
Why it matters: Travellers 65 and older are covered for barely a week and a half. Anyone on a longer trip needs separate coverage.
$200 credit: Rewards Centre only, by Dec 31Impact level: Medium
The $200 travel credit only works on Rewards Centre bookings and expires each December 31
The credit applies only to travel bought through the CIBC Rewards Centre and charged to the card, can take up to 30 days to post, and any unused part is forfeited at the end of the calendar year. It resets on January 1.
Why it matters: If you book travel directly with airlines and hotels, the credit is worth nothing. It doesn't carry over to the next year.
No fixed point value; CIBC sets the rateImpact level: Medium
CIBC doesn't publish a fixed value for Aventura Points, and can change the conversion rate without notice
Flights booked on the Aventura Airline Rewards Chart have a maximum ticket price per region (for example $400 for 20,000 points on a short-haul flight, about 2 cents a point), but only if the fare comes close to that maximum; a cheaper fare gets no credit for the difference. Flexible travel, paying down your balance and shopping with points use a points-to-dollars ratio that CIBC sets and can change at any time without notice.
Why it matters: The advertised travel value of the welcome bonus assumes you book flights priced near the chart maximum. Other redemptions are likely to be worth less.
30,000 pts need $25,000 first-year spendImpact level: Medium
30,000 of the 80,000 bonus points need $25,000 of spending in the first year
The headline 80,000 points includes a 30,000-point anniversary bonus paid only if you have at least $25,000 in net eligible purchases in the first 12 statement periods and the account is open and in good standing. The other 50,000 need $6,000 in the first 4 statement periods.
Why it matters: Without about $2,100 a month of card spending, the bonus is 50,000 points.
2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds are converted at a new rate
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted to Canadian dollars at the rate CIBC pays, plus a fee of 2.5% of the converted amount. The fee applies to both debits and credits, and a refund is converted at the rate on the day it's applied, which may differ from the original purchase.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees, and a refunded foreign purchase can still leave you out of pocket.

2 missed payments: 25.99% for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates to 25.99% and 27.99% for at least a year
If CIBC doesn't receive your Required Payment on time twice in any 12-month period, your rates rise to 25.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash advances, balance transfers and convenience cheques, for at least 12 months.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it far more expensive. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.
Default: CIBC can debit your depositsImpact level: Medium
If your account isn't in good standing, CIBC can take the balance from your CIBC deposit accounts and term deposits
When the account isn't in Good Standing, CIBC can demand the full balance and collect it by debiting any deposit account you have with it, or by redeeming fixed-term deposits, whether or not they've matured. It can also suspend or cancel the account without notice, for that or any other reason.
Why it matters: If you bank at CIBC, a missed payment can lead to withdrawals you didn't schedule and to a GIC being cashed early.
6 lounge visits a year, guests includedImpact level: Low
Lounge access is 6 free visits a year, shared with guests
The Visa Airport Companion membership gives 6 complimentary visits per membership year, used for yourself and any guests. Extra visits cost $32 US per person.
Why it matters: Couples use two visits per stop, so 6 visits cover about three departures.
Phone cover: 2%/month depreciation, 10% offImpact level: Low
Phone insurance pays the depreciated value, 2% less for every month you've owned the device, minus 10%
Mobile device insurance covers loss, theft or accidental damage up to $1,500, but the payout is capped at the device's depreciated value: the purchase price minus 2% for each completed month since you bought it, then minus a 10% deductible. CIBC's own example: a $900 phone lost after 10 months pays at most $648.
Why it matters: A two-year-old phone is covered for about half its price, less the deductible.
Bonus: past Aventura card in 12 months = noneImpact level: Low
The full welcome bonus needs $6,000 in net purchases in the first 4 statement periods, and isn't available if you've had another Aventura card in the last 12 months
The bonus points require $6,000 in net purchases in the first 4 statement periods. CIBC may approve your application but withhold the offer if you opened, transferred or cancelled another Aventura card in the last 12 months, and product changes from other CIBC cards don't qualify. The offer can be changed or withdrawn without notice.
Why it matters: If you're switching from another Aventura card, you won't get the bonus. Plan the spending before you apply.
Points cancelled 60 days after closingImpact level: Low
Unredeemed Aventura Points are cancelled 60 days after you close the card
Aventura Points don't expire while the card is open, but they're cancelled if they remain unredeemed 60 days after you voluntarily close the account, or 12 months after the primary cardholder's death.
Why it matters: Redeem your points before you cancel or downgrade the card.

The Verdict
The Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege has some of CIBC's strongest coverage: 31-day medical (10 days at 65+), $100,000 rental cars, generous trip cancellation, and 2 points per dollar on most everyday spending.
Much of the $499 fee is offset only if you book through the CIBC Rewards Centre: the $200 credit and the 3x rate depend on it, the points have no fixed value, and lounge access is 6 visits a year.
The Recommendation: Worth it for heavy spenders who already book through the CIBC Rewards Centre. Otherwise, the fee is hard to recover.
