The Fine Print Report
Light fine print, but only useful for U.S.-dollar spending.
2.5% fee on all non-USD purchases, incl. CADImpact level: High
Every purchase that isn't in U.S. dollars, including Canadian-dollar purchases, carries a 2.5% conversion fee
The card is billed in U.S. dollars, so CIBC converts any transaction in another currency, Canadian dollars included, to U.S. dollars at 2.5% over the rate it pays. The fee applies to credits too, so a refunded purchase is converted again at the rate on the day of the refund.
Why it matters: Using this card in Canada costs 2.5% on every purchase. It only makes sense for spending in U.S. dollars.
Fee rebate needs US$ account + premium cardImpact level: Medium
The fee rebate requires a CIBC U.S.-dollar account and a second CIBC card with a fee of $99 or more
The $35 US fee is rebated only if, when it's charged, you hold a CIBC US$ Personal Account or CIBC Bank USA Smart Account and an eligible premium CIBC personal credit card (annual fee of $99 or more), all in good standing. The card can't be paid from the CIBC Bank USA Smart Account.
Why it matters: Without a second premium CIBC card, you pay the fee every year.
No travel medical or trip insuranceImpact level: Medium
No travel medical, trip cancellation or baggage insurance
The card's insurance is limited to common carrier accident, rental car, and purchase security and extended warranty coverage. There's no emergency medical, trip cancellation, trip interruption, flight delay or baggage coverage.
Why it matters: If you travel, you'll need separate travel medical and trip insurance.
No fixed point value; CIBC sets the rateImpact level: Medium
CIBC doesn't publish a fixed value for Aventura Points, and can change the conversion rate without notice
Flights booked on the Aventura Airline Rewards Chart have a maximum ticket price per region (for example $400 for 20,000 points on a short-haul flight, about 2 cents a point), but only if the fare comes close to that maximum; a cheaper fare gets no credit for the difference. Flexible travel, paying down your balance and shopping with points use a points-to-dollars ratio that CIBC sets and can change at any time without notice.
Why it matters: The advertised travel value of the welcome bonus assumes you book flights priced near the chart maximum. Other redemptions are likely to be worth less.
2 missed payments: 25.99% for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates to 25.99% and 27.99% for at least a year
If CIBC doesn't receive your Required Payment on time twice in any 12-month period, your rates rise to 25.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash advances, balance transfers and convenience cheques, for at least 12 months.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it far more expensive. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.
Show 3 more findingsShow fewer
Default: CIBC can debit your depositsImpact level: Medium
If your account isn't in good standing, CIBC can take the balance from your CIBC deposit accounts and term deposits
When the account isn't in Good Standing, CIBC can demand the full balance and collect it by debiting any deposit account you have with it, or by redeeming fixed-term deposits, whether or not they've matured. It can also suspend or cancel the account without notice, for that or any other reason.
Why it matters: If you bank at CIBC, a missed payment can lead to withdrawals you didn't schedule and to a GIC being cashed early.
0.5 points per US$ on most purchasesImpact level: Low
Most purchases earn half an Aventura Point per U.S. dollar
Outside Rewards Centre travel, the card earns 1 point for every US$2 spent.
Why it matters: The rewards are minor; the reason to hold the card is avoiding conversion on U.S. spending.
Points cancelled 60 days after closingImpact level: Low
Unredeemed Aventura Points are cancelled 60 days after you close the card
Aventura Points don't expire while the card is open, but they're cancelled if they remain unredeemed 60 days after you voluntarily close the account, or 12 months after the primary cardholder's death.
Why it matters: Redeem your points before you cancel or downgrade the card.

The Verdict
The U.S. Dollar Aventura Gold Visa avoids conversion on U.S.-dollar spending, and its fee can be rebated for clients with a CIBC US$ account and a premium CIBC card.
Anything not in U.S. dollars, including Canadian purchases, is converted with a 2.5% fee, rewards are low, and there's no travel medical coverage.
The Recommendation: Useful for snowbirds and cross-border shoppers who pay from a CIBC US$ account; use another card for everything else.
