The Fine Print Report

Fine Print Impact Score
2/5

Light fine print. Simple terms; the points are worth little each.

1 High4 Medium2 LowTap a finding for details
8x ≈ 1.20% backImpact level: High

More Rewards points are worth 0.15¢ each, so 8x is about 1.20% back

RBC values More Rewards points at 10,000 points for $15 at grocery partners, or 0.15¢ each. At that rate, 8 points per $1 returns 1.20% and 4 points returns 0.60%.

Why it matters: The large multipliers translate into modest returns; compare in percent.

Western Canada only; not in QuebecImpact level: Medium

More Rewards partners are in Western Canada, and the card isn't offered in Quebec

More Rewards partner locations are in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Yukon, and the card isn't available to Quebec residents.

Why it matters: Outside Western Canada the points have little use.

2.5% FX markup; refunds won't fully reverseImpact level: Medium

Foreign currency purchases are converted at 2.5% over the benchmark rate, and refunds won't fully reverse

Purchases in a foreign currency are converted to Canadian dollars at 2.5% over the benchmark exchange rate; some are converted to U.S. dollars first. If you carry a balance, interest is charged on the full converted amount. If a foreign purchase is refunded, the agreement says the charge and credit won't exactly balance because of the exchange rate.

Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent abroad or online in foreign currency costs about $25 in conversion markup.

2 missed payments: higher rates for a yearImpact level: Medium

Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates until you pay on time for 12 straight months

If your minimum payment isn't made by the due date and still isn't paid by your next statement date, twice in any 12-month period, RBC raises your purchase and cash advance rates to the higher rates in your Information Box. The higher rates apply to new transactions and all remaining balances until you make 12 consecutive on-time minimum payments.

Why it matters: Carrying a balance becomes more expensive for at least a year. Automatic minimum payments prevent it.

RBC can debit your other accountsImpact level: Medium

RBC can take what you owe from your other RBC accounts without telling you first

If you don't meet the agreement's payment terms, RBC can deduct amounts owing on the card from any other account you have with RBC and apply them to the card, without notice in advance.

Why it matters: If your chequing account is also at RBC, a missed card payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule.

Needs $60,000 incomeImpact level: Low

Requires $60,000 personal or $100,000 household income despite the $0 fee

The card requires a minimum personal income of $60,000 or household income of $100,000.

Why it matters: If you don't qualify, the More Rewards RBC Visa earns 5x and 3x with no income requirement.

No travel insurance includedImpact level: Low

No travel insurance; coverage is limited to purchases and mobile devices

The Verdict

The More Rewards RBC Visa Infinite is a fit for Western Canadian More Rewards members, with a simple welcome bonus.

At 0.15¢ per point the returns are 1.20% at partners and 0.60% elsewhere, comparable to a basic cash back card.

The Recommendation: Good if you already shop at More Rewards partners. Otherwise, a cash back card pays more for less effort.
