The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. The perks are real but conditional.
20,000 points need a 2nd year of feesImpact level: Medium
20,000 of the 80,000 bonus points require keeping the card into a second year
The last 20,000 bonus points are awarded for a purchase posted in the 14th month after the account opened, after the $599 annual fee has been charged a second time.
Why it matters: Count the welcome bonus as 60,000 points unless you'll pay the fee twice.
30,000 points need $20,000 in 6 monthsImpact level: Medium
30,000 bonus points need $20,000 in purchases in 6 months
30,000 points require $3,000 in purchases in the first 3 months. Another 30,000 require $20,000 within the first 6 months.
Why it matters: That's about $3,300 a month for six months, which most households won't reach.
No bonus if you had a Scotia card in 2 yrsImpact level: Medium
The welcome offer excludes anyone who has had any Scotiabank personal credit card in the last 2 years
The 80,000-point offer excludes current and former primary or secondary cardholders of any Scotiabank personal credit card in the past 2 years, including people switching from another Scotiabank card. Bonuses are credited about 8 weeks after you qualify, and only if the account is open and in good standing.
Why it matters: If you already hold a Scotiabank card, or did recently, you won't receive the bonus, even as a supplementary cardholder.
Travel credit: one Scene+ Travel bookingImpact level: Medium
The $250 travel credit only applies to one Scene+ Travel booking of $250 or more
The credit applies to the first single transaction of $250 or more (after any points used) made through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia, in each account year. It doesn't apply to travel booked elsewhere, can't be split across bookings, and expires at the end of each account year without carrying over.
Why it matters: To use it, book at least one trip a year through Expedia's Scene+ site; airline or hotel direct bookings don't count.
Statement credit: about 0.67¢ a pointImpact level: Medium
Points used as a statement credit are worth about a third less than on travel
Scotiabank's own examples value 20,000 points at $200 off travel (1¢ a point) or at eligible grocery stores, but 3,000 points at only a $20 account credit (about 0.67¢ a point). Apply Points to Travel only works on travel charged to the card in the previous 12 months, while the account is open.
Why it matters: To get full value, redeem for travel, groceries at Sobeys-family stores, Cineplex or Home Hardware rather than as a credit to the card.

Points lost if account is closed for causeImpact level: Medium
Points are cancelled immediately if Scotiabank closes the account because it isn't in good standing
If Scotiabank closes the card account because it's past due, over limit or otherwise in breach of the credit agreement, the Scene+ points associated with it are cancelled and forfeited immediately. Points also aren't posted while the account isn't in good standing. If you close the account yourself, the points stay in your Scene+ account.
Why it matters: Redeem points regularly rather than letting a large balance build up.
Scotiabank can debit your other accountsImpact level: Medium
Scotiabank can take what you owe from your other Scotiabank accounts
The credit agreement lets Scotiabank debit any other account you have with it for any payment you owe on the card and apply it to your balance.
Why it matters: If your chequing account is also at Scotiabank, a missed card payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule.
'Up to 6X' is for Scene+ Travel bookingsImpact level: Low
The advertised 'up to 6X' only applies to Scene+ Travel hotel, car and activity bookings
Travel purchases earn 3 points per $1. The extra 3 points apply only to hotels, car rentals and activities booked through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia.
Why it matters: Flights and travel booked directly earn 3x, not 6x.
Guests count against 10 lounge visitsImpact level: Low
Guests count against each cardholder's 10 lounge visits; extra visits cost $32 USD
Each cardholder's 10 complimentary visits can be used for accompanying guests, and visits beyond them cost $32 USD per person, charged to the card.
Why it matters: Adding a supplementary card ($199) gives that person their own 10 visits.
Needs $150,000 incomeImpact level: Low
Requires $150,000 in personal income or $200,000 household income
Scotiabank requires a minimum personal income of $150,000, household income of $200,000, or $400,000 in assets under management. Supplementary cards cost $199 a year each.
Why it matters: If you don't qualify, the Passport Visa Infinite+ offers no-FX travel for $150.
Bonus points depend on merchant codesImpact level: Low
Bonus points depend on how the merchant is coded, and stores where the category isn't the main business don't count
Accelerated points are awarded by Merchant Category Code (MCC). Purchases at merchants where the category isn't their primary business don't qualify, and separate merchants inside a store may be coded differently. Foreign-currency and cash-like purchases don't earn bonus rates.
Why it matters: Groceries bought at a big-box or warehouse store, or meals at a food court inside another business, may earn only 1 point per dollar.
Card can be frozen, limit cut without noticeImpact level: Low
Scotiabank can freeze the card or cut your limit to zero without notice or a reason
The agreement lets Scotiabank block, suspend or freeze the account, or reduce the credit limit (even to zero), at any time, without telling you in advance and even if you're not in default, including when the account is inactive.
Why it matters: Don't rely on this card as your only way to pay, especially while travelling.

The Verdict
The Passport Visa Infinite Privilege has the strongest insurance in Scotiabank's lineup ($5 million medical for 31 days) and generous lounge access, with no foreign transaction fees.
Its $250 travel credit only works through Scene+ Travel, and the full welcome bonus needs $20,000 in 6 months plus a second $599 fee.
The Recommendation: Worth it for high-income travellers who book through Scene+ Travel and use lounges. Otherwise the Passport Visa Infinite+ delivers the no-FX benefit for $150.
