The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. Most of the value depends on using the companion voucher.
Medical: 15 days, 3 at 65+, call firstImpact level: High
Emergency medical covers 15 days of a trip under 65, but only 3 days at 65 or older, and you pay 20% if you don't call first
Out-of-province emergency medical coverage applies to the first 15 consecutive days of a trip if you're under 65 and the first 3 days if you're 65 or older. If you don't call the assistance centre before getting treatment, or use a non-approved provider, you pay 20% of covered expenses up to $25,000.
Why it matters: Longer trips need top-up coverage, and a trip of more than 3 days at 65 or older isn't covered beyond day 3.
Companion voucher needs $5,000/yr spendImpact level: Medium
The annual companion voucher requires $5,000 in spending and is issued after the annual fee is charged
After the welcome voucher, each annual companion voucher is issued only if you spend $5,000 in net purchases during the voucher year, and arrives 4 to 6 weeks after the annual fee is charged. The voucher covers a companion's base fare from $119 for economy within North America; taxes, fees and charges are extra. It can instead be exchanged for 30% off one base fare or two lounge passes.
Why it matters: Factor in the taxes and fees on the companion's ticket, which can exceed the voucher price.
Lounge access costs $32 USD a visitImpact level: Medium
Lounge access through DragonPass costs $32 USD per person per visit
The card includes Mastercard Travel Pass through DragonPass for 1,300+ lounges, but each visit costs $32 USD per person.
Why it matters: Free lounge visits only come from exchanging the companion voucher for two passes.
10,000 bonus points need a second-year feeImpact level: Medium
10,000 of the 70,000 welcome points arrive only after the first year, after the second annual fee is charged
The anniversary points are credited 12 to 16 weeks after the first anniversary of the account, and only if the account is still open and in good standing. Annual fees are charged on the first day of the month after opening and every year after, so the second $139 fee is billed before the anniversary points arrive.
Why it matters: Count the welcome offer as 70,000 points only if you plan to keep the card for a second year.
2.5% FX markup; refunds won't fully reverseImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases are converted at 2.5% over the benchmark rate, and refunds won't fully reverse
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted to Canadian dollars at 2.5% over the benchmark exchange rate; some are converted to U.S. dollars first. If you carry a balance, interest is charged on the full converted amount. If a foreign purchase is refunded, the agreement says the charge and credit won't exactly balance because of the exchange rate.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent abroad or online in foreign currency costs about $25 in conversion markup.

2 missed payments: higher rates for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates until you pay on time for 12 straight months
If your minimum payment isn't made by the due date and still isn't paid by your next statement date, twice in any 12-month period, RBC raises your purchase and cash advance rates to the higher rates in your Information Box. The higher rates apply to new transactions and all remaining balances until you make 12 consecutive on-time minimum payments.
Why it matters: Carrying a balance becomes more expensive for at least a year. Automatic minimum payments prevent it.
RBC can debit your other accountsImpact level: Medium
RBC can take what you owe from your other RBC accounts without telling you first
If you don't meet the agreement's payment terms, RBC can deduct amounts owing on the card from any other account you have with RBC and apply them to the card, without notice in advance.
Why it matters: If your chequing account is also at RBC, a missed card payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule.
Costco, Walmart don't count as groceryImpact level: Low
Costco and Walmart don't earn the 2x grocery rate
The 2x grocery rate applies only to merchants coded as grocery stores (MCC 5411). RBC confirms Costco and Walmart are coded as warehouses and earn 1.5x.
Why it matters: If you buy groceries at a warehouse store, count on 1.5x.

The Verdict
The WestJet World Elite is valuable for WestJet flyers: the companion voucher and free checked bags can exceed the $139 fee on a single family trip, and WestJet points are worth a fixed 1¢.
The voucher needs $5,000 a year in spending, lounge access is pay-per-visit, and medical coverage drops to 3 days at 65.
The Recommendation: A strong pick if you fly WestJet. For airline-agnostic points, compare the RBC Avion Visa Infinite.
