The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. Value depends on shopping at partners.
Medical: 15 days, none at 65+Impact level: High
Travel medical covers only 15 days, and nobody 65 or older
Emergency travel medical covers up to $5,000,000 per person for the first 15 days of a trip, but only if everyone covered is 64 or younger on the departure date. Conditions that weren't stable in the 90 days before departure aren't covered.
Why it matters: Anyone 65 or older, and anyone away longer than 15 days, needs separate travel medical insurance.
1,500 pts = $10 only in-store or eGiftImpact level: Medium
1,500 points = $10 only in store or on eGift cards; other redemptions use rates BMO sets separately
BMO's advertised value of 0.67 cents a point applies to in-store purchases at participating partners and eGift cards, in $10 steps, with a $750 daily limit. The program terms say points have no cash value, and travel and merchandise redemptions are subject to separate redemption rates.
Why it matters: Value the points at about 0.67 cents each, and only if you shop at the participating brands.
2x capped at $500 per category, per monthImpact level: Medium
The 2x categories stop after $500 each per statement period
Groceries, gas and EV charging, wholesale clubs and liquor stores earn 2 points per dollar on the first $500 in each category per statement period, at merchants in Canada. Spending above that earns 1 point. The 10x partner rate stops after $25,000 a year.
Why it matters: A household spending $900 a month on groceries earns 2x on just over half of it.
Full bonus needs $20,000 in 365 daysImpact level: Medium
The full 100,000-point bonus needs $20,000 in purchases within 365 days
The welcome points come in stages, and the last and largest stage needs $20,000 in net purchases within 365 days of opening the account. Bonus points are credited up to 8 weeks after each stage is met, the account must be open and in good standing, and BMO may cancel the bonus if you close the card within 365 days. You're not eligible if you've held the same card before or are switching from another BMO card.
Why it matters: Plan the spending before you apply: falling short of a stage forfeits that stage entirely.
2.5% FX fee; refunds credited at a lower rateImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds come back at a lower rate
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted at the network's rate plus 2.50%. Refunds are converted at the network's rate minus 2.50% on the day the refund posts, and BMO's agreement says the credit will in most cases be less than the original charge.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees, and a returned foreign purchase costs about the same again.

2 missed payments: 25.99% for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates to 25.99% and 28.99% for at least a year
If you miss your minimum payment and haven't paid it by the time the next statement is prepared, twice in any 12-month period, your rates rise to 25.99% on purchases and 28.99% on cash advances and balance transfers, for at least 12 months.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it far more expensive. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.
Closure: BMO can take your depositsImpact level: Medium
BMO can close the account without notice, demand the full balance and take it from your BMO deposits
BMO may cancel your card or close the account at any time without telling you in advance. The total debt is then due immediately, and if you don't pay it, BMO may apply any money you have on deposit with it or its affiliates against the balance.
Why it matters: If your chequing or savings account is also at BMO, an unpaid balance can be taken from it directly.
Points cancelled after 24 months idleImpact level: Low
Blue Points can be cancelled after 24 months without activity
Outside Quebec, if no points are added to or used from your Blue Rewards account for 24 consecutive months, the program can cancel them without notice or compensation. BMO can also change or end its participation in the program at any time without notice.
Why it matters: Card spending keeps the account active; if you stop using the card, redeem your balance.
4 lounge passes a year, guests includedImpact level: Low
The 4 free lounge passes are shared with anyone travelling with you; extra visits cost US$32 each
Membership in Mastercard Travel Pass (DragonPass) includes 4 complimentary visits a year, which also cover any companions you bring. Every visit after that costs US$32 per person, billed to the card, and you must enroll separately to activate the benefit.
Why it matters: Travelling as a couple, 4 passes cover 2 trips through a lounge.
