Points & Redemption
Rates: BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard product page, footnote ^^ (retrieved 2026-10-18). The CardTruth estimate is our own valuation, not a rate stated in the terms. The program states no fixed cash value, so what a point is worth depends on how you redeem it.
The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. Real value for Porter flyers; the companion pass is harder to repeat.
Yearly companion pass needs $50,000 spendImpact level: High
"A round-trip companion pass per year" requires $50,000 of spending each year
Apart from the one-time pass for spending $9,000 in your first 180 days, an annual companion pass is only issued when you spend $50,000 within a card year; the count resets on each anniversary. The pass covers the base fare only (taxes, fees and surcharges are extra), on PorterClassic seats on Porter-operated flights, and is cancelled if you close or change the card.
Why it matters: Most cardholders will get one companion pass, in their first year. After that, it takes about $4,200 a month of spending.
Medical: 21 days, none at 65+Impact level: High
Travel medical covers only 21 days, and nobody 65 or older
Emergency travel medical covers up to $5,000,000 per person for the first 21 days of a trip, but only if everyone covered is 64 or younger on the departure date. Conditions that weren't stable in the 90 days before departure aren't covered.
Why it matters: Anyone 65 or older, and anyone away longer than 21 days, needs separate travel medical insurance.
Bonus categories capped at $5,000–$20,000Impact level: Medium
Every bonus category has a low annual limit
Porter purchases earn 3x on the first $20,000 a year; gas and transportation 2x on the first $5,000; groceries and dining together 2x on the first $10,000; hotels 2x on the first $5,000. Purchases must be bought directly from Porter to count, and merchants coded differently earn 1 point.
Why it matters: Groceries and dining share one $10,000 limit, about $830 a month.
Perks only on Porter-operated itinerariesImpact level: Medium
Flight perks only apply on itineraries operated entirely by Porter
Checked bag, carry-on, seat selection, boarding and re-accommodation benefits are only valid on itineraries wholly operated by Porter, not on codeshare or partner flights, and only when your linked VIPorter number is on the booking. They end immediately when the card is closed or changed.
Why it matters: If you also fly Air Canada or WestJet, most of this card's value won't apply on those trips.
2.5% FX fee; refunds credited at a lower rateImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds come back at a lower rate
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted at the network's rate plus 2.50%. Refunds are converted at the network's rate minus 2.50% on the day the refund posts, and BMO's agreement says the credit will in most cases be less than the original charge.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees, and a returned foreign purchase costs about the same again.

2 missed payments: 25.99% for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates to 25.99% and 28.99% for at least a year
If you miss your minimum payment and haven't paid it by the time the next statement is prepared, twice in any 12-month period, your rates rise to 25.99% on purchases and 28.99% on cash advances and balance transfers, for at least 12 months.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it far more expensive. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.
Closure: BMO can take your depositsImpact level: Medium
BMO can close the account without notice, demand the full balance and take it from your BMO deposits
BMO may cancel your card or close the account at any time without telling you in advance. The total debt is then due immediately, and if you don't pay it, BMO may apply any money you have on deposit with it or its affiliates against the balance.
Why it matters: If your chequing or savings account is also at BMO, an unpaid balance can be taken from it directly.
Point value: BMO's 1.5¢ average, not fixedImpact level: Low
BMO values VIPorter points at 1.5 cents based on its own average, not a fixed rate
The offer's dollar figures use an average of $0.015 per point from VIPorter flight redemptions between January and October 2024. Points are used for flights, so their value depends on the fare.
Why it matters: Treat the advertised $2,400 as an estimate; the cash value of points changes with Porter's prices.
Closing the card restarts point expiryImpact level: Low
Points stop being protected from expiry once you close the card
VIPorter points don't expire while the card account is active. After cancellation they follow the VIPorter program's expiry rules.
Why it matters: If you close the card, keep earning or redeem with Porter so your points don't expire.

The Verdict
For regular Porter flyers, the VIPorter World Elite's free checked bags and carry-ons for up to 8 companions, plus a first-year companion pass, can be worth more than the $199 fee.
The yearly companion pass in the headline needs $50,000 of spending a year, earn rates are capped low, and the perks don't apply off Porter's own flights.
The Recommendation: Worth it if you fly Porter several times a year; otherwise a general travel card fits better.
