The Fine Print Report
Low fine print. A plain low-rate card; the main unknown is which of three rate tiers you'll get.
Rate up to Prime + 13%, mark-up can changeImpact level: Medium
Your rate could be Prime plus 13%, set from your personal credit, and the mark-up can change
CIBC assigns one of three rates, Prime plus 2.5%, 7% or 13%, based on your personal credit bureau and other information when you apply. The rate is variable and moves with CIBC Prime without notice, and CIBC says the mark-up itself is subject to change.
Why it matters: The advertised low rate is the best of three tiers, and you only learn yours after approval.
Grace period needs 2 full payments in a rowImpact level: Medium
Outside Quebec, the interest-free period needs two statements paid in full in a row
Outside Quebec, CIBC charges no interest on a statement's purchases only if you pay that statement in full and you also paid the previous statement in full. Cash advances, balance transfers and convenience cheques have no interest-free period at all.
Why it matters: On a card built for carrying a balance, interest usually runs on new purchases from the day you make them.
You're personally liable for the balanceImpact level: Medium
You and the business are both personally liable for everything on the account, including employees' cards
The primary cardholder and the business are jointly and individually liable to repay the whole balance, including authorized users' spending, without setoff or counterclaim.
Why it matters: If the business can't pay, CIBC can collect the full balance from you personally.
2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
2.5% foreign currency fee, charged on refunds too
Foreign currency transactions are converted at the rate CIBC pays, plus a fee of 2.5% of the converted amount, on both debits and credits.
Why it matters: A refunded foreign purchase costs the fee twice.
Cash advance: $5–$7.50 fee + interestImpact level: Low
Cash advances cost $5 in Canada or $7.50 abroad, plus interest from the day you take them
Each cash advance costs $5.00 in Canada and $7.50 outside Canada (not charged to Quebec residents), in addition to any ATM operator fee, and interest starts on the day it's taken.
Why it matters: The low rate applies to cash too, but the per-withdrawal fee makes small advances expensive.
Show 2 more findingsShow fewer
$29 over-limit feeImpact level: Low
$29 fee each statement period the balance is over the limit
A $29 fee is charged on the day the balance goes over the credit limit, and again on the first day of each following statement period that it stays over, once per period. It doesn't apply in Quebec.
Why it matters: Employee cards share one limit, so spending can push the account over without your knowing.
No purchase or travel insuranceImpact level: Low
No insurance of any kind is included
The bizline Visa's benefits guide lists card replacement, emergency cash and discounts, but no purchase protection, extended warranty, rental car or travel insurance.
Why it matters: Equipment and travel bought with the card aren't protected.

The Verdict
The CIBC bizline Visa is a no-fee, no-rewards business card for carrying a balance: one variable rate tied to CIBC Prime for purchases and cash, with up to 9 free employee cards and a $15,000 income requirement.
The fine print decides the rate: CIBC sets it from Prime plus 2.5% to Prime plus 13% based on your personal credit, outside Quebec the grace period needs two full payments in a row, there's no insurance, and you're personally liable for the balance.
The Recommendation: Best for small businesses that sometimes carry a balance and qualify for the lowest tier. If you pay in full every month, a no-fee cash back business card earns more.
