The Fine Print Report
Light fine print. The terms are simple; the limits are the low base earn rate and the missing medical cover.
No travel medical or trip cancellationImpact level: High
No travel medical or trip cancellation insurance
The Aeroplan Visa Platinum's insurance covers baggage delay and loss, flight delay, common carrier accidents, rental cars, hotel burglary, mobile devices and purchases. It does not include emergency travel medical or trip cancellation/interruption insurance; TD offers these only as optional paid products.
Why it matters: If you're buying this card for Air Canada trips, budget for separate travel medical insurance on every trip outside your province.
1 point per $1.50 on most spendingImpact level: Medium
Everyday purchases earn 1 point per $1.50, and dining isn't a bonus category
Outside gas, EV charging, groceries and direct Air Canada purchases, the card earns 1 Aeroplan point for every $1.50, about 0.67 points per dollar. Restaurants, travel booked elsewhere and bills all earn the base rate.
Why it matters: At CardTruth's 2¢ estimate, the base rate returns about 1.3% in value, and only if you redeem for flights.
Bonus can be refused if you had one beforeImpact level: Medium
Aeroplan can refuse or take back the bonus if you've had a welcome bonus on a similar Aeroplan card
Under the Aeroplan program terms, bonus points may not be issued, and may be revoked, if you previously received welcome points for a new Aeroplan credit card of the same category with TD or another issuer. The offer also excludes anyone who opened any TD Aeroplan Visa account in the last 12 months.
Why it matters: If you've had an entry-level Aeroplan card bonus before, don't count on the 20,000 points.
2.5% FX fee, charged again on refundsImpact level: Medium
2.5% foreign currency fee, charged again when a foreign purchase is refunded
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted by Visa and charged a 2.5% foreign currency conversion fee. If a foreign purchase is refunded, TD deducts another conversion fee from the refund and does not return the fee it charged on the original purchase.
Why it matters: A $500 USD hotel deposit that's refunded in full costs you about 5% of its value in fees (2.5% going out, 2.5% coming back), plus any exchange-rate movement in between.
2 late payments: higher rates for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two late payments in 12 months move you to higher interest rates for at least a year
If TD doesn't receive your minimum payment on time twice within 12 consecutive statement periods, it raises your interest rates to the higher rates in your Disclosure Statement. The higher rates start the next statement period and only end after 12 consecutive on-time minimum payments.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it more expensive for at least 12 months. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.

Missed payment: TD can debit other accountsImpact level: Medium
After one missed payment, TD can take money from your other TD accounts without notice
If your full minimum payment isn't received by the due date, the account is no longer in Good Standing. TD may then deduct money from any other account the Primary Cardholder has with the TD Bank Group, with or without notifying you, and may demand the full balance.
Why it matters: If your chequing or savings account is also at TD, a single missed payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule, which could bounce other payments.
$89 fee from year twoImpact level: Low
The annual fee rebate covers the first year only; $89 is charged from year two
The first-year rebate applies to the primary cardholder (and additional cardholders added while the offer runs) only if the card is activated and used within 3 months of opening. From the second year the $89 fee, plus $35 per additional cardholder, is charged.
Why it matters: After the first year, the card has to earn more than $89 in value each year to be worth keeping.
Bonus capped at $80,000; AC must be directImpact level: Low
The 1x bonus rate stops after $80,000 a year, and Air Canada only counts when booked directly
The 1 point per $1 rate applies to up to $80,000 in combined annual purchases of gas, groceries and Air Canada products, then drops to 1 point per $1.50. Air Canada flights bought through a travel agency or other website earn the base rate.
Why it matters: Book Air Canada flights on aircanada.com to get the bonus rate.

The Verdict
The Aeroplan Visa Platinum is an easy entry into Aeroplan with no income requirement and a first-year fee rebate.
It's thin for an $89 card after year one: no travel medical or trip cancellation insurance, no free checked bag, and most spending earns 1 point per $1.50.
The Recommendation: Fine for a first year of collecting Aeroplan points. If you qualify, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite adds travel medical, trip cancellation and a free checked bag for $50 more a year.
