Points & Redemption
Rates: TD Rewards Program Terms and Conditions 599188 (04/25), sections 3.2 and 3.3; TD Rewards Visa product page footnote 13 (Amazon.ca). The CardTruth estimate is our own valuation, not a rate stated in the terms. It assumes the redemption described above; most other options return less.
The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. The earn rates depend on Expedia For TD, and the travel insurance is missing medical cover.
4.5x = 2.25%: points worth 0.5¢ at mostImpact level: High
TD Rewards Points are worth 0.5¢ at most, so 4.5x equals 2.25% and the 50,000-point bonus is about $250
TD Rewards Points are worth $1 per 200 points on Expedia For TD travel and at least $1 per 400 points on other redemptions. At the best rate, 6x is a 3% return, 4.5x is 2.25% and the 1.5x base rate is 0.75%.
Why it matters: Judge the card by percent back, not multipliers. Away from Expedia For TD, the base rate returns as little as 0.375%.
No travel medical or trip cancellationImpact level: High
No travel medical or trip cancellation insurance on a card marketed for travel
The Platinum Travel Visa covers baggage, flight delay, common carrier accidents, rental cars, hotel burglary, mobile devices and purchases. It has no emergency travel medical or trip cancellation/interruption insurance; TD sells these separately.
Why it matters: Budget for travel medical insurance on every trip outside your province.
Best earn and value need Expedia For TDImpact level: Medium
The 6x travel rate and the best point value both require Expedia For TD
Travel booked anywhere other than Expedia For TD earns the 1.5x base rate, including bookings with Expedia Inc. itself. Points redeemed for anything other than Expedia For TD travel are worth at least 400 points per $1.
Why it matters: If you book directly with airlines and hotels, the card earns 1.5x on travel.
4.5x/3x capped at $15,000 per categoryImpact level: Medium
The 4.5x and 3x rates stop after $15,000 a year in each category
Groceries, dining, public transit, and recurring bills and streaming each earn their bonus rate on the first $15,000 of purchases a year, then 1.5x.
Why it matters: A household spending more than $1,250 a month on groceries will hit the grocery cap before the year ends.
Points lost if TD closes your accountImpact level: Medium
If TD closes the account, all points are lost immediately; a year without earning or redeeming can trigger closure
If TD closes the account for any reason, every TD Rewards Point is forfeited immediately (outside Quebec). If you close it yourself, you have 90 days to redeem. A year with no points earned or redeemed makes the account inactive, and TD may close it.
Why it matters: Redeem points regularly rather than letting them accumulate on an unused card.

2.5% FX fee, charged again on refundsImpact level: Medium
2.5% foreign currency fee, charged again when a foreign purchase is refunded
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted by Visa and charged a 2.5% foreign currency conversion fee. If a foreign purchase is refunded, TD deducts another conversion fee from the refund and does not return the fee it charged on the original purchase.
Why it matters: A $500 USD hotel deposit that's refunded in full costs you about 5% of its value in fees (2.5% going out, 2.5% coming back), plus any exchange-rate movement in between.
2 late payments: higher rates for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two late payments in 12 months move you to higher interest rates for at least a year
If TD doesn't receive your minimum payment on time twice within 12 consecutive statement periods, it raises your interest rates to the higher rates in your Disclosure Statement. The higher rates start the next statement period and only end after 12 consecutive on-time minimum payments.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it more expensive for at least 12 months. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.
Missed payment: TD can debit other accountsImpact level: Medium
After one missed payment, TD can take money from your other TD accounts without notice
If your full minimum payment isn't received by the due date, the account is no longer in Good Standing. TD may then deduct money from any other account the Primary Cardholder has with the TD Bank Group, with or without notifying you, and may demand the full balance.
Why it matters: If your chequing or savings account is also at TD, a single missed payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule, which could bounce other payments.

The Verdict
The Platinum Travel Visa is an accessible travel rewards card with no income requirement, and its bonus categories return up to 3% when you book through Expedia For TD.
For an $89 card marketed for travel, it lacks the two most important travel coverages: emergency medical and trip cancellation. Outside Expedia For TD, earning and redemption values both fall.
The Recommendation: Reasonable if you book through Expedia For TD and already have medical coverage. If you qualify, the First Class Travel Visa Infinite adds travel medical, trip cancellation and higher earn rates for $50 more.
