Points & Redemption
Rates: TD Rewards Program Terms and Conditions 599188 (04/25), sections 3.2 and 3.3; TD Rewards Visa product page footnote 13 (Amazon.ca). The CardTruth estimate is our own valuation, not a rate stated in the terms. It assumes the redemption described above; most other options return less.
The Fine Print Report
Light fine print. The terms are simple; the main limits are point value and low category caps.
3x = 1.5%: points worth 0.5¢ at mostImpact level: High
TD Rewards Points are worth 0.5¢ at most, so 3x equals 1.5% and the base rate as little as 0.25%
Points are worth $1 per 200 on Expedia For TD travel, 0.33¢ each at Amazon.ca, and at least $1 per 400 on other redemptions. At the best rate, 4x returns 2%, 3x returns 1.5% and the 1x base rate 0.5%; redeemed at the minimum rate, the base rate returns 0.25%.
Why it matters: Many no-fee cash back cards pay 0.5% to 1% on all purchases with no redemption rules. This card only compares well if you book travel through Expedia For TD.
Bonus rates capped at $5,000 per categoryImpact level: Medium
The 3x and 2x rates stop after $5,000 a year in each category
Groceries, dining, public transit, and recurring bills and streaming each earn their bonus rate on the first $5,000 of annual purchases (about $417 a month), then 1x.
Why it matters: A household spending $800 a month on groceries hits the grocery cap by mid-year.
No travel insurance includedImpact level: Medium
No travel insurance; coverage is limited to purchases and mobile devices
The Benefit Coverages Guide includes only Purchase Security and Extended Warranty Protection and Mobile Device Insurance. There's no travel medical, trip cancellation, baggage or rental car coverage.
Why it matters: Travel booked with this card, including through Expedia For TD, has no card-based insurance.
Points lost if TD closes your accountImpact level: Medium
If TD closes the account, all points are lost immediately; a year without earning or redeeming can trigger closure
If TD closes the account for any reason, every point is forfeited immediately (outside Quebec). If you close it yourself, you have 90 days to redeem. An account with no points earned or redeemed for a year is inactive, and TD may close it.
Why it matters: No-fee cards are often left in a drawer. Use or redeem regularly so the account doesn't go inactive with points on it.
2.5% FX fee, charged again on refundsImpact level: Medium
2.5% foreign currency fee, charged again when a foreign purchase is refunded
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted by Visa and charged a 2.5% foreign currency conversion fee. If a foreign purchase is refunded, TD deducts another conversion fee from the refund and does not return the fee it charged on the original purchase.
Why it matters: A $500 USD hotel deposit that's refunded in full costs you about 5% of its value in fees (2.5% going out, 2.5% coming back), plus any exchange-rate movement in between.

2 late payments: higher rates for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two late payments in 12 months move you to higher interest rates for at least a year
If TD doesn't receive your minimum payment on time twice within 12 consecutive statement periods, it raises your interest rates to the higher rates in your Disclosure Statement. The higher rates start the next statement period and only end after 12 consecutive on-time minimum payments.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it more expensive for at least 12 months. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.
Missed payment: TD can debit other accountsImpact level: Medium
After one missed payment, TD can take money from your other TD accounts without notice
If your full minimum payment isn't received by the due date, the account is no longer in Good Standing. TD may then deduct money from any other account the Primary Cardholder has with the TD Bank Group, with or without notifying you, and may demand the full balance.
Why it matters: If your chequing or savings account is also at TD, a single missed payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule, which could bounce other payments.
Welcome bonus worth $50 at Amazon.caImpact level: Low
The welcome bonus is valued at $50 when spent at Amazon.ca
The 15,152-point bonus is advertised as worth $50 at Amazon.ca, where each point is worth $0.0033. Redeemed through Expedia For TD the same points are worth about $75, and at the program minimum about $38.
Why it matters: The bonus is modest either way; it shouldn't drive the choice of card.

The Verdict
The TD Rewards Visa is a no-fee card whose bonus categories return up to 1.5% (2% on Expedia For TD), if you redeem through Expedia For TD.
The low caps ($5,000 per category) and the 0.25¢ minimum value for other redemptions mean many cardholders will do better with a plain cash back card.
The Recommendation: Good as a no-fee card if you book through Expedia For TD. For straightforward returns, the TD Cash Back Visa pays in dollars, and the Amex Green earns transferable points with no fee.
