The Fine Print Report

Fine Print Impact Score
1/5

Minimal fine print. The terms are simple; the limits are low earn rates and caps.

6 Medium1 LowTap a finding for details
1% capped at $5,000 per categoryImpact level: Medium

1% stops after $5,000 a year in each category, limiting each category to $50 a year

Each 1% category (groceries; gas and EV charging; transit; recurring bills and streaming) earns 1% on the first $5,000 of purchases a year, then 0.5%. Everything else earns 0.5%.

Why it matters: A household spending $600 a month on groceries earns 1% until about August, then 0.5%. The card's maximum bonus-category cash back is $200 a year.

No travel insurance includedImpact level: Medium

No travel insurance; coverage is limited to purchase security and extended warranty

The card's only included coverage is Purchase Security and Extended Warranty Protection. There's no travel medical, trip cancellation, baggage, rental car or mobile device coverage.

Why it matters: Don't rely on this card for trips or rental cars.

Cash back lost if TD closes your accountImpact level: Medium

Unredeemed cash back is lost if TD closes the account; a year without activity can trigger closure

If TD closes the account for any reason, all Cash Back Dollars are forfeited immediately (outside Quebec). A year with no cash back earned or redeemed makes the account inactive, and TD may close it and set an expiry date for the balance. On-demand redemption needs at least $25.

Why it matters: If this is a backup card you rarely use, choose annual redemption so small balances are credited each January.

2.5% FX fee, charged again on refundsImpact level: Medium

2.5% foreign currency fee, charged again when a foreign purchase is refunded

Purchases in a foreign currency are converted by Visa and charged a 2.5% foreign currency conversion fee. If a foreign purchase is refunded, TD deducts another conversion fee from the refund and does not return the fee it charged on the original purchase.

Why it matters: A $500 USD hotel deposit that's refunded in full costs you about 5% of its value in fees (2.5% going out, 2.5% coming back), plus any exchange-rate movement in between.

2 late payments: higher rates for a yearImpact level: Medium

Two late payments in 12 months move you to higher interest rates for at least a year

If TD doesn't receive your minimum payment on time twice within 12 consecutive statement periods, it raises your interest rates to the higher rates in your Disclosure Statement. The higher rates start the next statement period and only end after 12 consecutive on-time minimum payments.

Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it more expensive for at least 12 months. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.

Missed payment: TD can debit other accountsImpact level: Medium

After one missed payment, TD can take money from your other TD accounts without notice

If your full minimum payment isn't received by the due date, the account is no longer in Good Standing. TD may then deduct money from any other account the Primary Cardholder has with the TD Bank Group, with or without notifying you, and may demand the full balance.

Why it matters: If your chequing or savings account is also at TD, a single missed payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule, which could bounce other payments.

No welcome bonusImpact level: Low

No welcome bonus is currently offered

The product page lists no welcome offer for the Cash Back Visa; the card's only incentive is its ongoing earn rate.

Why it matters: Other no-fee cards sometimes offer a first-year bonus; compare before applying.

  • Want a no-fee card with simple cash back
  • Spend modestly on groceries, gas and bills
  • Want a backup card for a TD bank account
  • Prefer cash over points
  • Don't need insurance from your card

Consider alternatives if you...

  • Spend over $5,000 a year in a category
  • Want travel or mobile device insurance
  • Want a welcome bonus
  • Spend mostly outside the bonus categories
  • Make many foreign-currency purchases

The Verdict

The Cash Back Visa is a basic no-fee card: 1% on everyday categories and 0.5% elsewhere, with straightforward redemption.

Low caps and a 0.5% base rate make it modest; its appeal is simplicity rather than value.

The Recommendation: Fine as a no-fee backup card. If you spend $1,000 or more a month on groceries, gas and bills, the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite's 3% rate usually covers its $139 fee.
