The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. Strong earning; the bonus targets and fee are steep.
Full bonus needs $75,000 in 12 monthsImpact level: High
The full 200,000-point bonus needs $75,000 in purchases within 12 months
The welcome points come in stages, and the last and largest stage needs $75,000 in net purchases within 12 months of opening the account. Bonus points are credited up to 8 weeks after each stage is met, the account must be open and in good standing, and BMO may cancel the bonus if you close the card within 365 days. You're not eligible if you've held the same card before or are switching from another BMO card.
Why it matters: Plan the spending before you apply: falling short of a stage forfeits that stage entirely.
Medical: 22 days, only 3 at 65+Impact level: High
Travel medical covers only 3 days of a trip once you're 65
Emergency travel medical covers up to $5,000,000 per person, for the first 22 days of a trip if you're 64 or younger, and only the first 3 days if you're 65 or older. Conditions that weren't stable before departure (90 days, or 180 days at 65 or older) aren't covered.
Why it matters: Travellers 65 and older need separate medical coverage for anything longer than a long weekend.
Bonus rates: Canadian merchants onlyImpact level: Medium
The bonus rates only apply at merchants located in Canada
The footnote limits the accelerated rate to dining, travel (air fare, hotel, car rental), grocery, drugstore and gas purchases made at merchant locations in Canada, classified by the card network's merchant category code. The same kind of purchase made abroad, or at a merchant whose code puts it in a different category, earns the base rate.
Why it matters: A hotel or restaurant bill on a trip earns the base rate, not the bonus.
Points: 0.67¢ on travel, 0.5¢ otherwiseImpact level: Medium
Points are worth 0.67 cents on travel and 0.5 cents on anything else, and only within 90 days of the purchase
Pay with Points credits your card for a purchase at 150 points per $1 if the merchant is classified as a travel merchant (airline, hotel, car rental, cruise, travel agency and similar), and 200 points per $1 for anything else. Purchases can only be covered up to 90 days after they're made, and point redemptions don't count toward your minimum payment.
Why it matters: The welcome bonus value BMO advertises assumes travel redemptions. Used for other purchases, the points are worth a quarter less.
2.5% FX fee; refunds credited at a lower rateImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds come back at a lower rate
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted at the network's rate plus 2.50%. Refunds are converted at the network's rate minus 2.50% on the day the refund posts, and BMO's agreement says the credit will in most cases be less than the original charge.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees, and a returned foreign purchase costs about the same again.

2 missed payments: 25.99% for a yearImpact level: Medium
Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates to 25.99% and 28.99% for at least a year
If you miss your minimum payment and haven't paid it by the time the next statement is prepared, twice in any 12-month period, your rates rise to 25.99% on purchases and 28.99% on cash advances and balance transfers, for at least 12 months.
Why it matters: If you ever carry a balance, two late payments make it far more expensive. Automatic minimum payments avoid this.
Closure: BMO can take your depositsImpact level: Medium
BMO can close the account without notice, demand the full balance and take it from your BMO deposits
BMO may cancel your card or close the account at any time without telling you in advance. The total debt is then due immediately, and if you don't pay it, BMO may apply any money you have on deposit with it or its affiliates against the balance.
Why it matters: If your chequing or savings account is also at BMO, an unpaid balance can be taken from it directly.
5x limits: $15,000 to $25,000 per categoryImpact level: Low
Each 5x category has its own annual limit, as low as $15,000 for gas and drugstores
The 5-point rate applies to the first $25,000 a year on dining and on travel, $20,000 on groceries, and $15,000 each on gas and drugstores, counted from January 1. After that, the category earns 1 point per dollar.
Why it matters: Most households won't reach these limits, but very high spenders will earn 1x on the excess.
6 lounge passes a year, guests includedImpact level: Low
The 6 free lounge passes are shared with anyone travelling with you; extra visits cost US$32 each
Membership in the Visa Airport Companion Program (DragonPass) includes 6 complimentary visits a year, which also cover any companions you bring. Every visit after that costs US$32 per person, billed to the card, and you must enroll separately to activate the benefit.
Why it matters: Travelling as a couple, 6 passes cover 3 trips through a lounge.
Offer window closes October 31, 2026Impact level: Low
The welcome offer only applies to applications received by October 31, 2026
The footnote's offer period runs from December 15, 2025 to October 31, 2026, and BMO can change or withdraw the offer without notice.
Why it matters: The bonus you see may not be the one available when you apply. Check the current footnote first.
Phone cover: depreciated value, 1 claim/yrImpact level: Low
Phone insurance pays the depreciated value, and allows one claim a year across all your BMO cards
Mobile device insurance pays up to $1,000, but a loss or theft claim is limited to the purchase price minus 2% for each completed month since you bought it, less a 10% deductible ($25 minimum). You can make one claim in any 12 months and two in any 48 months, and the limit applies to all your BMO cards with this coverage combined.
Why it matters: A two-year-old phone is covered for about half its price, less the deductible.
Points expire 90 days after closingImpact level: Low
After you close the card, points can only go to merchandise and gift cards, and expire after 90 days
Points don't expire while the account is open and in good standing. After cancellation you have 90 days to redeem them, for merchandise and gift cards only, or to move them to another BMO Rewards card. The welcome bonus is cancelled if you cancel within 30 days of being billed the annual fee and the fee is refunded.
Why it matters: Use your points on travel or statement credits before you close or downgrade the card.

The Verdict
The eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege earns 5 points per dollar across five major categories with high annual limits, and its trip insurance is among BMO's broadest.
The $599 fee is offset by the $200 credit only if you use it, the headline 200,000 points need $75,000 of spending in a year, and the 5x rate only counts in Canada.
The Recommendation: Worth it for high spenders who'll hit the bonus targets and redeem points for travel.
