The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. A good deal for Prime members who shop at Amazon, and a weak one otherwise.
2.5% needs Prime; 1.5% withoutImpact level: High
The 2.5% rates need an Amazon Prime membership, and only one card per Prime account gets them
Your rates depend on the Prime status of the Amazon.ca account linked to the card. Without Prime, Amazon.ca and Whole Foods earn 1.5% and foreign currency purchases 1%. Only one card at a time earns the Prime rates on a Prime account: the one most recently linked. If someone else in the household gets the card on the same account, yours drops to the non-Prime rates.
Why it matters: Without Prime, the card pays 1.5% at Amazon and costs about 1.5% net on foreign currency purchases.
Rewards: Amazon.ca Gift Cards onlyImpact level: High
Rewards are paid only as Amazon.ca Gift Cards, in $20 steps
At the end of each statement period, every 2,000 points (100 points = $1) is turned into a $20 Amazon.ca Gift Card loaded to your Amazon.ca account. Rewards can't be taken as cash or a statement credit.
Why it matters: The rewards are only worth face value if you spend them at Amazon.ca.
Points forfeited if MBNA closes accountImpact level: High
If MBNA closes the account for any reason, including the cardholder's death, all unredeemed points are lost
If MBNA closes the account, whether for fraud, non-payment, non-renewal, death or any other reason, all unredeemed points are forfeited at once. If you close it yourself, points are paid out only in full $20 steps, and anything under 2,000 points is lost.
Why it matters: Up to $19.99 of rewards can be lost when the card is closed.
Only Amazon.ca and Whole Foods get 2.5%Impact level: Medium
Other Amazon-owned sites, Amazon Pay and third-party sellers inside Whole Foods earn only 1%
The higher rate applies on Amazon.ca and at Whole Foods Market stores in Canada. Purchases with Amazon Pay at other merchants, on other Canadian Amazon-owned websites, and from third-party vendors operating inside Whole Foods stores earn the 1% rate.
Why it matters: Check that a purchase is made on Amazon.ca itself before counting on the higher rate.
2 late payments: rates rise to 26.99%Impact level: Medium
Two late payments in 12 months raise your rates to 26.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash advances
If MBNA doesn't receive the minimum payment on time twice within 12 consecutive statement periods, purchases go from 21.74% to 26.99%, and balance transfers and cash advances from 22.99% to 27.99%. The higher rates last until you make 12 on-time payments in a row.
Why it matters: If you sometimes carry a balance, set up automatic minimum payments.

2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds are charged the fee again
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted at the Mastercard rate plus a 2.5% fee. A refund is converted at the rate on the day it posts, minus another 2.5% fee. With Prime, the 2.5% back on these purchases roughly cancels the fee; without Prime you get 1% back.
Why it matters: Without Prime, every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $15 after rewards.
Missed payment: TD can use your depositsImpact level: Medium
After one missed payment, MBNA can take money from your other TD accounts without telling you
The card is issued by TD through its MBNA division. If a minimum payment is missed, the account is no longer in good standing, and TD can deduct money from any other account the primary cardholder has with the TD Bank Group, with or without notice.
Why it matters: If you bank with TD, a missed card payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule.
World or Platinum tier, set by incomeImpact level: Low
One application decides between two cards, and the lower tier has less insurance
Applicants with $50,000 personal or $80,000 household income can get the World Mastercard; otherwise the application becomes a Platinum Mastercard. Rates, fees and rewards are the same, but only the World card includes price protection.
Why it matters: Check which tier you're approved for before relying on price protection.

The Verdict
For Prime members, the Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard pays 2.5% at Amazon.ca and Whole Foods and on foreign currency purchases, and 1% everywhere else, with no annual fee.
Rewards come only as Amazon.ca Gift Cards. Without Prime the rates drop to 1.5% and 1%, only one card per Prime account gets the Prime rates, and points are lost if MBNA closes the account.
The Recommendation: Worth it if you have Prime and spend regularly at Amazon.ca, especially for foreign currency purchases. Without Prime, a general cash-back card pays more.
