The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. The rewards hold their value only if you redeem for travel.
Cash redemptions: 200 points = $1Impact level: High
Taken as cash, points are worth half a cent: 200 points per $1
Travel booked through MBNA Rewards is 100 points per $1. Statement credits, deposits and donations are 200 points per $1, with a 10,000-point minimum. The same points are worth more on the World Elite card, which pays cash at 120 points per $1.
Why it matters: As cash, 2 points per $1 is 1% back and everything else is 0.5%. Many no-fee cash-back cards pay more.
Points forfeited if MBNA closes accountImpact level: High
Points are lost if MBNA closes the account for missed payments, and when the primary cardholder dies
If MBNA closes the account because it isn't in good standing, all points expire at once. If you close it, you have 120 days to redeem. Points also expire when MBNA learns the primary cardholder has died. After two missed payments in a row, you can't redeem until the account is back in good standing.
Why it matters: Redeem points regularly instead of saving up a large balance.
2 late payments: rates rise to 26.99%Impact level: High
Two late payments in 12 months raise your rates to 26.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash advances
If MBNA doesn't receive the minimum payment on time twice within 12 consecutive statement periods, purchases go from 21.99% to 26.99%, and balance transfers and cash advances from 22.99% to 27.99%. The higher rates last until you make 12 on-time payments in a row.
Why it matters: If you sometimes carry a balance, set up automatic minimum payments.
2x only at listed merchant codesImpact level: Medium
The 2x categories are set by merchant code, so bars, Walmart, Costco and other stores that code differently earn 1 point
Only purchases with these Mastercard merchant codes earn 2 points: restaurants 5812 and 5814; groceries 5411, 5462 and 5499; digital media 5815, 5816 and 5968; memberships 7997 and 8699; household utilities 4814, 4899 and 4900. MBNA doesn't check how merchants code their sales.
Why it matters: Groceries bought at Walmart or Costco, or drinks at a bar, earn 1 point.
Missed payment: TD can use your depositsImpact level: Medium
After one missed payment, MBNA can take money from your other TD accounts without telling you
MBNA is a division of TD. If a minimum payment is missed, the account is no longer in good standing, and TD can deduct money from any other account the primary cardholder has with the TD Bank Group, with or without notice, and can demand the full balance.
Why it matters: If you bank with TD, a missed card payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule.

2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds are charged the fee again
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted at the Mastercard rate plus a 2.5% fee. A refund is converted at the rate on the day it posts, minus another 2.5% fee, and the fee on the original purchase isn't returned.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees.
No travel or rental car insuranceImpact level: Low
No travel insurance of any kind
The card's insurance is purchase assurance, extended warranty and mobile device insurance. There's no travel medical, trip cancellation, baggage or rental car cover.
Why it matters: Buy travel insurance separately, and don't decline the rental agency's collision waiver on the strength of this card.

The Verdict
The MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus Mastercard earns 2 points per $1 at restaurants and grocery stores and on digital media, memberships and household bills, up to $10,000 a year in each, with no annual fee.
Points are worth 1¢ only on travel booked through MBNA; as cash they're worth half a cent, so the 2x categories pay 1%. The categories depend on merchant codes, and points are lost if MBNA closes the account for missed payments.
The Recommendation: Reasonable as a no-fee card if you redeem for travel booked through MBNA. If you'd take cash, a no-fee cash-back card pays more.
