The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. Strong everyday rates, but their value depends on merchant codes and how you redeem.
5x only at listed merchant codesImpact level: High
The 5x categories are set by merchant code, so bars, Walmart, Costco and other stores that code differently earn 1 point
Only purchases with these Mastercard merchant codes earn 5 points: restaurants 5812 and 5814; groceries 5411, 5462 and 5499; digital media 5815, 5816 and 5968; memberships 7997 and 8699; household utilities 4814, 4899 and 4900. MBNA doesn't check how merchants code their sales. Bars, warehouse clubs, discount and department stores use other codes.
Why it matters: Groceries bought at Walmart or Costco, or drinks at a bar, earn 1 point, not 5.
Points forfeited if MBNA closes accountImpact level: High
Points are lost if MBNA closes the account for missed payments, and when the primary cardholder dies
If MBNA closes the account because it isn't in good standing, all points expire at once. If you close it, you have 120 days to redeem. Points also expire when MBNA learns the primary cardholder has died. After two missed payments in a row, you can't redeem until the account is back in good standing.
Why it matters: Redeem points regularly instead of saving up a large balance.
2 late payments: rates rise to 26.99%Impact level: High
Two late payments in 12 months raise your rates to 26.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash advances
If MBNA doesn't receive the minimum payment on time twice within 12 consecutive statement periods, purchases go from 21.99% to 26.99%, and balance transfers and cash advances from 22.99% to 27.99%. The higher rates start on the second statement period after the second miss and last until you make 12 on-time payments in a row.
Why it matters: If you sometimes carry a balance, set up automatic minimum payments.
Cash redemptions: 120 points = $1Impact level: Medium
Points are worth 1¢ only on travel booked through MBNA; as cash they're worth about 0.83¢
Travel booked through MBNA Rewards is 100 points per $1. Statement credits, deposits and donations are 120 points per $1, with a 6,000-point minimum. Merchandise and gift cards are priced in the Rewards Catalogue.
Why it matters: Taken as cash, 5 points per $1 is about 4.2% back and 1 point is about 0.83%.
Missed payment: TD can use your depositsImpact level: Medium
After one missed payment, MBNA can take money from your other TD accounts without telling you
MBNA is a division of TD. If a minimum payment is missed, the account is no longer in good standing, and TD can deduct money from any other account the primary cardholder has with the TD Bank Group, with or without notice, and can demand the full balance.
Why it matters: If you bank with TD, a missed card payment can lead to a withdrawal you didn't schedule.

2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds are charged the fee again
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted at the Mastercard rate plus a 2.5% fee. A refund is converted at the rate on the day it posts, minus another 2.5% fee, and the fee on the original purchase isn't returned.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees, and a $1,000 refund comes back about $25 short.
Travel medical: 21 days, under 65 onlyImpact level: Medium
Travel medical covers only the first 21 days and no one 65 or older, and there's no trip cancellation insurance
Travel medical insurance covers emergencies in the first 21 days of a trip, only for insured people under 65, and excludes pre-existing conditions that aren't stable. Baggage cover needs the ticket paid in full with the card. Rental car cover excludes vehicles worth $65,000 or more and rentals over 31 days. There's no trip cancellation or interruption insurance.
Why it matters: For longer trips, travellers 65 or older, or expensive rentals, buy separate cover.
$50 for the first authorized userImpact level: Low
The $120 fee is charged after your first purchase, and the first authorized user costs $50
The annual fee is billed on the first statement after you first use the card, then in the same month each year. The first authorized user costs $50 a year, billed with the primary fee; further authorized users are free.
Why it matters: A household that adds one user pays $170 a year.

The Verdict
The MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard earns 5 points per $1 at restaurants and grocery stores and on digital media, memberships and household bills, up to $50,000 a year in each, for a $120 annual fee.
The 5x depends on the merchant's code, so Walmart, Costco and bars earn 1 point. Points are worth 1¢ only on travel booked through MBNA (about 0.83¢ as cash), and are lost if MBNA closes the account for missed payments.
The Recommendation: Worth the fee if you spend heavily at supermarkets, restaurants and on recurring bills. If you'd take your rewards as cash, compare a cash-back card.
