The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. A good store card, but the rewards are locked to Canadian Tire's stores.
CT Money: only at Canadian Tire storesImpact level: High
Rewards are Canadian Tire Money, which you can only spend at Canadian Tire's own stores
Rewards are paid as electronic Canadian Tire Money. $1 is worth $1 off merchandise at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark's, Party City and the group's other participating stores. It can't be taken as cash or a statement credit, used to pay the card, or spent on alcohol, tobacco or gift cards.
Why it matters: If you rarely shop at Canadian Tire's stores, the rewards are worth less to you than cash back at the same rate.
CT Money expires after 18 months inactiveImpact level: Medium
CT Money can expire after 18 months with no earning or redeeming
Canadian Tire may expire the CT Money in your account after 18 months or more in which you neither collect nor redeem any. It can also cancel CT Money earned with the card if the card account isn't kept in good standing.
Why it matters: Using the card counts as activity, but a card kept in a drawer can lose its balance.
4% is on pre-tax price; some items excludedImpact level: Medium
The 4% is earned on the pre-tax price, and some items at the stores earn nothing
CT Money is calculated on the pre-tax amount of a purchase. Gift cards, lottery tickets, tobacco, alcohol, delivery, assembly and repair charges, environmental fees and other listed items don't earn it, and individual stores can exclude more.
Why it matters: On a $100 purchase plus 13% HST, $4 back is 3.5% of what you pay.
Groceries: code 5411 only, $12,000 capImpact level: Medium
The 1.5% grocery rate needs merchant code 5411, excludes Walmart and Costco, and drops to 1% after $12,000 a year
The grocery rate applies to the first $12,000 a calendar year at grocery stores with Mastercard merchant code 5411. Purchases at Walmart, Walmart Superstore and Costco are excluded, and stores that use a different code earn the everywhere-else rate. After $12,000, groceries earn 1%.
Why it matters: Big Walmart or Costco grocery shoppers won't get the grocery rate on those trips.
2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency purchases cost 2.5% extra, and refunds are converted at a new rate
Purchases in a foreign currency are converted at the Mastercard rate plus 2.5%. Refunds are converted at the rate on the day they post, minus 2.5%, so the amount credited can be less than you were charged.
Why it matters: Every $1,000 spent in a foreign currency costs about $25 in fees.

May be approved at 25.99%, not 21.99%Impact level: Medium
If you aren't approved at 21.99%, Canadian Tire Bank can still issue the card at 25.99% on purchases
The advertised rates are 21.99% on purchases and 22.99% on cash transactions outside Quebec. Applicants not approved at those rates may be issued the card at 25.99% and 27.99%.
Why it matters: If you carry a balance, check the rate on your approval before using the card.
Default: bank can use your depositsImpact level: Medium
If your account goes into default, Canadian Tire Bank can apply money you hold with it to the balance
An event of default includes a missed payment. The bank can then demand the full balance, raise the minimum payment, and apply any balance you have in another account or on deposit with Canadian Tire Bank against what you owe.
Why it matters: If you keep savings or a GIC at Canadian Tire Bank, a missed payment can lead to withdrawals you didn't schedule.
No insurance of any kindImpact level: Medium
The Triangle Mastercard comes with no insurance coverage
Purchase Security, Extended Warranty, Car Rental Collision/Loss Damage Waiver, Roadside Assistance and concierge are listed only for the Triangle World Elite Mastercard. The Triangle Mastercard has none of them, and neither card has travel medical or trip insurance.
Why it matters: Buy separate coverage for rentals and trips, and keep receipts for warranty claims.
Fuel: per litre, Gas+ and Petro-Canada onlyImpact level: Low
Fuel rewards are per whole litre, only at Gas+ and Petro-Canada, and the rate can vary by location
Fuel earns 5¢ per litre in CT Money at Gas+ and Petro-Canada, counted on whole litres and rounded down. The terms say the rate is subject to change and could vary by location.
Why it matters: At other gas stations, fuel earns the everywhere-else rate.
