The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. Large multipliers on low-value points, a shared category cap and an age limit on medical cover.
Points worth 0.5–0.67¢; 4x ≈ 2.7%Impact level: Medium
BMO Rewards points are worth 0.67¢ on travel and 0.5¢ otherwise, so 4 is about 2.7% at best
With Pay with Points, travel purchases (airlines, hotels, car rentals, cruises, rail, travel agencies) redeem at 150 points per $1 and all other purchases at 200 points per $1, within 90 days of the purchase.
Why it matters: The headline multipliers convert to modest returns, and redeeming for non-travel purchases cuts the value by a quarter.
Full bonus needs $30,000 in 12 monthsImpact level: Medium
The full welcome bonus needs $30,000 in a year, and points can be clawed back if you cancel
The bonus comes in three parts of 50,000 points: after $10,000 in net purchases within 110 days, $20,000 within 180 days and $30,000 within 365 days. Current and former holders of this card, and BMO cardholders switching into it, aren't eligible. If the card is cancelled within 365 days of opening, all bonus points earned in that period may be cancelled.
Why it matters: A business spending less than about $2,500 a month earns a third or two thirds of the advertised bonus.
4x ends after $50,000 combinedImpact level: Medium
The 4x rate covers $50,000 a year across gas, office supplies and phone bills combined
Gas, office supplies and cell phone and internet bills share one $50,000 yearly limit at 4 points; after that they earn 1.5. Purchases count only at merchants coded as service stations, fuel dispensers, stationery and office supply stores, or phone and internet billing.
Why it matters: Travel, dining and most other business spending earn 1.5 points, about 1% at best.
Medical: 15 days, none at 65+Impact level: Medium
Travel medical covers only the first 15 days of a trip, and nothing if you're 65 or older
Out-of-province emergency medical insurance covers the first 15 consecutive days of a trip, and only if you're 64 or under on your departure date. You must contact the Operations Centre before treatment or benefits may be limited.
Why it matters: Owners or employees 65 and over have no travel medical cover from this card.
Owners personally liable for the balanceImpact level: Medium
Each owner is personally liable, as primary obligor, for everything owed
Each owner of the business agrees to be liable as a primary obligor, individually and together with the business, for the total debt, so BMO can pursue the business or any owner, separately or together.
Why it matters: If the business can't pay, BMO can collect the full balance from you personally.

FX fee not published; refunds converted lowerImpact level: Medium
Foreign currency rate isn't published, and refunds come back at a lower rate
BMO converts foreign currency purchases at its Purchase Exchange Rate and refunds at a lower Refund Exchange Rate, so a refunded foreign purchase is credited back for less than it cost. Neither the agreement nor the product pages state the mark-up for business cards; BMO's personal cards charge 2.5%.
Why it matters: Ask BMO for the mark-up before spending in foreign currencies. Foreign spending earns only 1.5 points.
2 free lounge visits, then US$32 eachImpact level: Low
Only 2 lounge visits a year are free; after that each costs US$32
The card includes a Mastercard Travel Pass membership with two complimentary passes, usable by the primary cardholder or a companion. After that, you and companions pay US$32 per person per visit.
Why it matters: Frequent travellers will pay for most lounge visits, in U.S. dollars.

The Verdict
The BMO Ascend World Elite Business Mastercard earns 4 BMO Rewards points on gas, office supplies and phone bills and 1.5 on everything else, with travel insurance, a NEXUS credit, two lounge passes and virtual care visits.
The fine print shrinks it: points are worth at most 0.67¢, the 4x rate covers $50,000 a year combined, the full bonus needs $30,000 in a year, travel medical stops at 64, and owners are personally liable.
The Recommendation: Best for businesses spending heavily on gas, office supplies and telecom that can meet the $30,000 first-year spend. Businesses that spend most on travel or dining earn more with a card that rewards those categories.
