The Fine Print Report

Fine Print Impact Score
2/5

Low fine print. The earn rate is flat and uncapped; the short grace period and liability terms are the main points to check.

5 Medium1 LowTap a finding for details
17-day grace period, shortest of RBC'sImpact level: Medium

Only a 17-day grace period, and missing a full payment ends interest-free status

RBC's agreement gives this card a 17-day grace period, against 21 days on its other business cards. If you don't pay the new balance in full by the due date, interest is charged on that statement's purchases and on all new purchases from their transaction dates until you pay in full again.

Why it matters: There's less time between the statement and the due date, so set up automatic payment of the full balance.

Owners personally liable for the balanceImpact level: Medium

Unless the account is set up with corporate liability, every owner is personally liable for the whole balance

RBC offers this card under two agreements. Under the joint and several liability agreement, the business and each owner are liable for all debt on the account, however it was incurred. Under the corporate liability agreement, only the business is liable. RBC can also apply money any owner has on deposit with it against the debt without notice.

Why it matters: Ask which agreement your account uses. If it's joint and several, RBC can collect from you and take money from your personal RBC accounts.

1x on everything, no bonus categoriesImpact level: Medium

1 point per $1 on everything, with no bonus categories

Every net purchase earns 1 Avion point per $1. There are no higher rates on travel, gas, dining or any other category.

Why it matters: Points are worth most on flights from the Air Travel Redemption Schedule; other redemptions usually return less.

No travel medical insuranceImpact level: Medium

No travel medical or phone insurance

The certificate covers travel accident, rental car, trip cancellation and interruption, delays, hotel burglary and purchases, but not out-of-province emergency medical or mobile devices.

Why it matters: You need separate medical cover for trips outside your province.

2.5% FX mark-upImpact level: Medium

2.5% foreign currency mark-up

Foreign currency transactions are charged at 2.5% over the benchmark exchange rate.

Why it matters: Foreign spending earns 1 point but costs 2.5% extra.

Show 1 more findingShow fewer
Flight grid caps ticket pricesImpact level: Low

Flight redemptions cap the ticket price, and taxes and fees are extra

On the Air Travel Redemption Schedule, a short-haul round trip costs 15,000 points for a ticket priced up to $350. Taxes, service fees and surcharges are paid by the traveller.

Why it matters: The welcome points' advertised value assumes tickets priced at each zone's maximum.

The Verdict

The RBC Avion Visa Business is a mid-fee business card that earns 1 Avion point per $1 on everything, with 35,000 points on approval, points pooling with employee and personal Avion cards, and trip, delay and rental car insurance.

The fine print is mostly about payment and liability: the grace period is only 17 days, missing a full payment ends interest-free status, owners are personally liable unless the account uses the corporate agreement, and there's no travel medical cover.

The Recommendation: Best for small businesses that already use a personal Avion card and want to pool points, at a $50 fee with the rebate. If you'd use the travel medical insurance or want more points per dollar, the Avion Visa Infinite Business earns 1.25x.
