The Fine Print Report

Fine Print Impact Score
3/5

Moderate fine print. One shared annual cap on the bonus rates, and a penalty rate after two missed payments.

5 Medium1 LowTap a finding for details
3% and 2% end after $40,000 combinedImpact level: Medium

All 3% and 2% spending shares one $40,000 yearly limit

Cash back at 3% and 2% is capped at $40,000 in combined purchases a year across all those categories. After that, everything earns 1%. The year resets 12 months from the statement period in which the account was opened. Purchases count only at merchants with the listed category codes.

Why it matters: A business spending more than about $3,300 a month in the bonus categories earns 1% on the rest.

2 missed payments: 25.99% rateImpact level: Medium

Two missed payments in 12 months raise your rates to 25.99% and 27.99%

If you miss the minimum payment 2 or more times in any 12-month period, the rates rise to 25.99% on purchases and 27.99% on cash advances, balance transfers and credit card cheques, until you make 12 consecutive minimum payments on time.

Why it matters: A business that sometimes carries a balance pays far more after two late payments.

5% includes regular cash backImpact level: Medium

The 5% welcome rate replaces regular cash back, and past Scotiabank business cardholders are excluded

During the first 3 months, purchases earn 5% on up to $6,500 instead of the regular rates, so on 3% purchases the real extra is 2%. Anyone who has been a primary or secondary cardholder of a Scotiabank business credit card in the past 2 years isn't eligible.

Why it matters: The true bonus is between $130 and $260, depending on where you spend.

Medical: 8 days, 3 at 65+Impact level: Medium

Travel medical covers only the first 8 days of a trip, 3 at 65 or older

Travel emergency medical insurance covers only the first 8 consecutive days of a trip if you're under 65, and the first 3 days at 65 or older, up to $1,000,000 per insured person.

Why it matters: Most business trips abroad longer than a week need separate cover.

2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium

2.5% foreign currency mark-up on purchases and on refunds

Foreign currency transactions are converted at Visa's rate on the settlement date plus a 2.5% mark-up, which applies to both debit and credit transactions.

Why it matters: A refunded foreign purchase can cost the mark-up twice.

Extra cards $29 each, even if unusedImpact level: Low

Each additional card costs $29 a year, charged even if it's never activated

The annual fee is $79 for the primary card and $29 for each additional card, including co-borrowers and supplementary cardholders, charged when the card is issued regardless of activation.

The Scotia Momentum for business Visa is a low-fee business cash back card paying 3% on gas, EV charging, dining, office supplies and recurring bills, 2% on shipping and bookkeeping, and 1% on everything else, with travel medical, rental car and purchase insurance.

The fine print limits it: all 3% and 2% spending shares a $40,000 yearly cap, two missed payments raise the rate to 25.99%, the welcome 5% replaces regular cash back, and travel medical covers only 8 days.

The Recommendation: Best for small businesses spending up to about $3,300 a month on gas, dining, office supplies and recurring bills. For simple 1% on everything with no fee, the Momentum for business No Fee Visa is the alternative.
