Where it doesn't earn more (11)Hide
Excluded by the terms: Costco, Costco Gas, Walmart earn the base rate.
Online only: Amazon.ca, Crave, Disney+, Netflix, SkipTheDishes, Spotify, Uber (rides), Uber Eats take Mastercard online but not in store.
The Fine Print Report
Low fine print. The rules are clear; the main limits are the merchant-code exclusions and the low 0.5% base rate.
2% only in 2–3 categories you chooseImpact level: Medium
2% applies only in the categories you choose, and only three with a Tangerine savings account
You earn 2% in two categories of your choice, or three if your cash back is deposited into a Tangerine Savings Account instead of credited to the card. After your first change, each later change takes effect only after a 90-day hold. Everything else earns 0.5%.
Why it matters: Pick the categories where you spend the most. To get the third category you need a Tangerine Savings Account, and you can't take the cash back to another bank.
Superstores and Costco earn 0.5%Impact level: Medium
Superstores, wholesale clubs and alcohol stores earn 0.5%, even in a 2% category
The 2% categories are defined by merchant codes. Wholesale clubs, general-merchandise stores, alcohol retailers, convenience stores, discount and specialty food retailers, and dining inside a store or hotel that isn't coded as a restaurant don't qualify. Tangerine won't recategorize a purchase.
Why it matters: Groceries bought at Costco or a store that also sells general merchandise earn 0.5%, not 2%.
Missed payments can cancel cash backImpact level: Medium
A missed payment holds that month's cash back; two in a row cancel it
If you miss one minimum payment, that billing cycle's cash back is withheld until the account is back in good standing. If you miss two consecutive minimum payments, or the account is closed or isn't in good standing, outstanding and withheld cash back is cancelled. Two missed payments in a row also raise your rates to 25.95% on purchases and 27.95% on cash advances.
Why it matters: Set up at least the minimum payment automatically. The cash back credited to the card doesn't count toward the minimum payment.
2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
2.5% foreign currency fee on purchases and on refunds
Foreign currency transactions are converted at Mastercard's rate plus a 2.5% conversion fee. The fee applies to both charges and credits, and the fee on the original purchase isn't reversed when it's refunded.
Why it matters: A refunded foreign purchase can cost you the fee twice. Choosing Foreign Currency Spend as a 2% category offsets most of the fee on purchases.
Bonus: $1,500 in 90 days for $120Impact level: Low
The $120 welcome bonus needs $1,500 in the 90 days after activation
The offer pays $120 when at least $1,500 in net purchases posts in the 90 days starting when you activate the card. You must activate within 45 days of approval, and it's paid about 1–2 statements after the 90 days if the account is open and in good standing.
Why it matters: Activate promptly. $1,500 in three months is about $500 a month of spending on the card.

Phone cover: depreciation and deductibleImpact level: Low
Mobile device payouts are reduced by 2% a month and a deductible
Mobile device insurance pays the repair or replacement cost up to the device's depreciated value, which drops 2% for each month since purchase, less a deductible based on the purchase price, to a $1,000 maximum. The device must be bought with the card, or all its plan payments charged to it.
Why it matters: An $800 phone lost after 8 months is valued at $672 before the deductible. Charge the phone and every monthly wireless bill to the card to stay covered.
Rental cover voids past 31 daysImpact level: Low
Rental car cover ends at 31 days, and there's no travel medical or trip insurance
Rental car collision and loss damage insurance covers rentals of up to 31 consecutive days, including back-to-back rentals; a longer rental isn't covered at all, even for the first 31 days. Vehicles worth over $65,000 are excluded. The card has no travel medical, trip cancellation or delay insurance.
Why it matters: Split long rentals or use other cover. Travel medical and trip insurance come with the Rewards World Elite Mastercard, which has a $120 fee.
Rewards can change without noticeImpact level: Low
Tangerine can change the rates, categories or program without notice
Outside Quebec, Tangerine can change the cash back rates, categories, deposit timing and redemption options, or cancel the program, at any time without notice unless the law requires it. Quebec residents get 30 days' notice.
Why it matters: The 2% rate and category list aren't guaranteed for the life of the card.

The Verdict
The Money-Back World Mastercard earns the same as Tangerine's basic card, 2% in the categories you choose and 0.5% on everything else, and adds mobile device and rental car insurance with no annual fee.
The fine print narrows it. The 2% categories exclude superstores and wholesale clubs, missed payments can cancel cash back, the phone cover depreciates 2% a month, and there's no travel medical or trip insurance.
The Recommendation: Best for people who qualify on income and want a no-fee card that pays 2% where they spend most, plus phone and rental car cover. If you don't meet the $50,000 income requirement, the Money-Back Credit Card earns the same rewards without the insurance.
