The Fine Print Report

Fine Print Impact Score
3/5

Moderate fine print. The liability terms favour the owner, but who owns the points and how narrow the insurance is matter.

1 High6 MediumTap a finding for details
Trip cover: business trips, cardholder onlyImpact level: High

Trip insurance covers only business trips, and only the cardholder

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance excludes any trip not booked or taken for business purposes, and covers only the cardholder named on the card, up to $1,000 per trip for cancellation and $2,000 for interruption. Flight delay and baggage cover is up to $500 per occurrence.

Why it matters: A holiday booked on this card, or family travelling with you, isn't protected.

Points belong to the Rewards OfficerImpact level: Medium

The Aeroplan points belong to the Rewards Officer personally, not the business

All points, including the welcome bonus, go to the personal Aeroplan account of the one Rewards Officer the business names. The agreement says the business acknowledges those points are the Rewards Officer's property.

Why it matters: If the Rewards Officer leaves the company, the points already earned go with them.

Purchase security: $1,000 per lossImpact level: Medium

Purchase protection pays at most $1,000 per loss

Purchase security pays up to $1,000 per insured person per loss, even if several items are involved. Extended protection pays up to $10,000 per item and $25,000 per insured person a year.

Why it matters: A stolen laptop or piece of equipment worth more than $1,000 is only partly covered in its first 90 days.

Ref: CIBC Aeroplan Visa Business Plus Card Insurance Certificate (Amended and Restated July 1, 2025), Purchase Security & Extended Protection, Limits of Liability
Grace period needs 2 full payments in a rowImpact level: Medium

If the head office isn't in Quebec, the interest-free period needs two statements paid in full in a row

CIBC charges no interest on a statement's purchases only if the business pays that statement in full and also paid the previous statement in full, unless the business's head office is in Quebec.

Why it matters: One month of carrying a balance also costs interest on the next month's purchases, from the day they're made.

Ref: CIBC Business Credit Card Agreement (Business Liability) 12521-2026/08, Annual Summary of Rates and Fees, Interest-Free Grace Period
Bonus earn ends after $80,000 of spendingImpact level: Medium

All bonus earn rates, including Air Canada, stop after $80,000 of total card spending a year

The 2-point Air Canada rate and the 1.5-point rates apply only to the first $80,000 in net annual purchases on the account, counting every cardholder at every merchant. After that, everything earns 1 point per $1, except Hyatt.

Why it matters: With up to 16 cards on one account, a business can reach $80,000 quickly.

Show 2 more findingsShow fewer
Full bonus needs $40,000 in 12 monthsImpact level: Medium

The full welcome offer needs $40,000 in a year, and a past Aeroplan bonus can disqualify the Rewards Officer

Only 10,000 points come with the first purchase; 25,000 need $7,500 in the first 3 statement periods and 40,000 need $40,000 in the first 12. Under the Aeroplan program terms, no bonus may be paid if the Rewards Officer previously received one on an Aeroplan card of the same category from any issuer.

Why it matters: Choose a Rewards Officer who hasn't had an Aeroplan business card bonus before.

2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium

2.5% foreign currency fee, charged on refunds too

Foreign currency transactions are converted at the rate CIBC pays, plus a fee of 2.5% of the converted amount, on both debits and credits.

Why it matters: A refunded foreign purchase costs the fee twice, which matters on a travel card.

The Verdict

The CIBC Aeroplan Visa Business Plus earns 2 Aeroplan points on Air Canada and 1.5 on travel, dining and telecom, with free checked bags and lounge passes, but the business alone is liable and it supports up to 16 cards with spending controls.

The fine print shifts the risk elsewhere: the points belong personally to the Rewards Officer, trip insurance covers only business trips by the cardholder, purchase protection pays at most $1,000 per loss, and every bonus rate stops after $80,000 a year.

The Recommendation: Best for established businesses whose employees fly Air Canada for work and that want the company, not the owner, liable. Owners who want the points and family travel cover for themselves may prefer the standard Aeroplan Visa Business Card.
