The Fine Print Report
Moderate fine print. The insurance and welcome bonus are real, but the everyday earn rates and the medical cover's limits narrow who it suits.
1.5x only in 3 categories you chooseImpact level: Medium
1.5x applies only in the three categories you choose; everything else earns 1x
You earn 1.5 Scene+ points per $1 in three categories you choose from Tangerine's list, and 1 point per $1 on everything else. The categories are defined by merchant codes set by Mastercard.
Why it matters: At 1¢ a point, that's 1.5% back in your categories and 1% elsewhere, before the $120 fee. Pick the categories where you spend the most.
Superstores and Costco earn 1xImpact level: Medium
Superstores, wholesale clubs and alcohol stores earn 1x, even in a chosen category
Wholesale clubs, general-merchandise stores, alcohol retailers, convenience stores, discount and specialty food retailers, and dining inside a store or hotel that isn't coded as a restaurant don't qualify for 1.5x. Tangerine won't recategorize a purchase.
Why it matters: Groceries bought at Costco or a store that also sells general merchandise earn 1x, not 1.5x.
Travel medical: 15 days, under 65 onlyImpact level: Medium
Travel medical covers only the first 15 days of a trip, under age 65, and not authorized users
Emergency medical insurance covers the first 15 consecutive days of a trip for the primary cardholder, spouse and dependent children under 65. There's no coverage at 65 or older, and authorized users and their families aren't insured. Pre-existing conditions can be excluded.
Why it matters: For trips over 15 days, or travellers 65 and over, buy separate travel medical insurance.
Points lost if account closed in arrearsImpact level: Medium
Points are forfeited if Tangerine closes the account for not being in good standing
While the account is past due, over its limit or otherwise not in good standing, it earns no Scene+ points. If Tangerine closes the account because it isn't in good standing, the points earned with it are cancelled immediately. If you close it yourself, the points stay in your Scene+ account.
Why it matters: Redeem points regularly rather than saving a large balance, and keep at least the minimum payment on time.
2.5% FX fee, also charged on refundsImpact level: Medium
2.5% foreign currency fee on purchases and on refunds
Foreign currency transactions are converted at Mastercard's rate plus a 2.5% conversion fee. The fee applies to both charges and credits, and the fee on the original purchase isn't reversed when it's refunded.
Why it matters: For a travel card, the fee cancels most of the rewards on spending abroad. Choosing Foreign Currency Spend as a 1.5x category offsets only part of it.

Bonus: $5,000 in 90 days for 50,000Impact level: Low
The 50,000-point welcome bonus needs $5,000 in the first 90 days
The bonus is paid when $5,000 in net purchases posts in the 90 days starting when the account is opened (not when you activate the card). It isn't available if you've been a primary cardholder of this card before, and the points can be reversed if returns bring you below $5,000.
Why it matters: Plan about $1,700 a month of spending from the day the account opens.
4 lounge visits shared, guests countImpact level: Low
Four lounge visits a year are shared by everyone on the account, guests included
The DragonPass membership comes with four complimentary lounge visits per membership year for the whole account. Each person counts as a visit, so a cardholder and one guest use two. Further visits cost US$32 per person, and Tangerine can change or cancel the benefit without notice.
Why it matters: Two people travelling together use all four visits in two trips.
$30 a year per authorized userImpact level: Low
Each authorized user card costs $30 a year
On top of the $120 annual fee, each authorized user card costs $30 a year. Tangerine's Money-Back cards add up to five authorized users at no cost.
Why it matters: A household with two extra cards pays $180 a year.
Earn and redeem rules can changeImpact level: Low
Tangerine can change earn rates and redemption rules with 30 days' notice
Tangerine can change the points earned, the value of points, what they can be redeemed for, and the categories and merchants that qualify, by giving 30 days' notice. Keeping the card after the change counts as accepting it.
Why it matters: The 1.5x rate and the category list aren't guaranteed for the life of the card.

The Verdict
The Rewards World Elite is Tangerine's first fee card: 1.5x Scene+ points in three categories you choose and 1x on everything else, with travel insurance, four lounge visits a year and a 50,000-point welcome bonus.
The fine print narrows it. The earn rates are modest for a $120 card, the medical cover lasts only 15 days and stops at 65, the 2.5% foreign currency fee applies even on refunds, and points are lost if Tangerine closes the account in arrears.
The Recommendation: Best for Scene+ collectors who take short trips, qualify on income and will use the welcome bonus and lounge passes. If you mainly want cash back in your top categories, the no-fee Money-Back World Mastercard pays 2% there.
